“In the Trenches” closes the crossover with the expected ingredients: trapped victims, a ticking rescue clock and an investigation that must uncover who caused the disaster. Its strongest idea is that solving the crime is part of saving people. Its weakness is that the finale has so much to resolve that some of the explanation shows through the drama.

What is “In the Trenches” about?
The January 29, 2025 episode is the eleventh installment of Chicago P.D. Season 12 and the third part of a story that begins on Chicago Fire, continues on Chicago Med, and ends here. A gas-main explosion damages a city block and the tunnels beneath it. Firefighters, medical staff and police respond in their respective roles, while Intelligence investigates whether the catastrophe was deliberate.
In the P.D. chapter, people remain trapped underground as conditions worsen. Adam Ruzek and Stella Kidd are among them. Above ground, the rescue effort depends not only on reaching the victims but also on finding the people behind the incident. That connection gives the police plot an immediate purpose: the case is not a separate puzzle running alongside the rescue; it is one of the means to advance it.

Does the crossover ending earn its conclusion?
The rescue and investigation work best as one story
The finale’s clearest structural choice is its pair of clocks: the trapped passengers’ deteriorating situation and Intelligence’s effort to identify the offenders. The stakes stay legible because the investigation has a practical consequence for the people below. Fire and Med characters also remain part of the response rather than disappearing once the story moves into P.D.’s hour.
That shared emergency makes the crossover feel more integrated than a sequence of unrelated guest appearances. Each series brings its central function to the crisis—rescue, medical care and investigation—and the final chapter has to bring those strands together. The showrunners previewed P.D.’s role as tracking the offenders because reaching the trapped victims depended on solving the crime. That premise is effective, even if the episode sometimes has to spell out the machinery connecting its plots.
Character peril gives the case personal stakes
Ruzek and Kidd’s presence underground gives the danger a direct connection to the P.D. team. Trudy Platt’s shooting adds another link between personal peril and the investigation: she initially appears close to death, but cooling treatment saves her. Her account gives Voight information that moves the case forward. Mouch’s fear adds an emotional response to the danger, while Platt’s survival prevents her injury from being only a device for raising the stakes.
These beats help the episode turn a large-scale disaster into a story about people who know one another and must keep working under pressure. The episode has less room to linger over each relationship than a character-focused hour would, but the stakes are not merely spectacle.

As the last part, “In the Trenches” must rescue the trapped passengers, account for Platt’s survival, identify the conspirators and explain their motive. It delivers those pieces of closure, but the need to tie them together makes the finale feel busy. A critic listed by Rotten Tomatoes likewise described the ending as conclusive but over-explanatory; that is one critical reaction, not evidence of a broader consensus.

The title’s “expected” ending is fair as a description of the crossover formula, not as a claim about audience opinion. The episode follows the shape viewers might anticipate from a three-show emergency: the teams coordinate, the danger escalates, and the last chapter solves the case while completing the rescue. The more distinctive payoff is the way the investigation is made necessary to the rescue. The cost is that the explanation of how everything fits can compete with the urgency of the crisis.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How “In the Trenches” fits the three-part event
The crossover’s original broadcast order was Chicago Fire, Chicago Med, then Chicago P.D. NBC announced the event for January 29, 2025, from 8–11 p.m. ET/PT, with the episodes scheduled to stream on Peacock the following day. This is historical scheduling information, not a guarantee of current access.
For viewers following all three chapters, P.D. functions as the resolution rather than a standalone disaster episode. Fire establishes the physical emergency, Med brings medical triage into the response, and P.D. pushes the investigation toward the people responsible. The handoff gives the event a clear through-line, though viewers who arrive only for this episode may find themselves entering a story whose crisis and character stakes were established earlier.
