Brittany Frederick’s review for CBR sees the episode’s scale and quick cross-show interactions as a draw, while noting that exposition and setup for the larger story limit how self-contained this opening hour can feel.
Episode details and crossover order
“In the Trenches: Part I” is Chicago Fire Season 13, Episode 11. NBC lists it as airing January 29, 2025; Frederick’s review also identifies that as its original NBC broadcast date. The episode opens a three-part story, not a standalone crossover event.

What the Fire episode contributes
Frederick’s review describes the opener as a fast-moving launch that raises the stakes and brings characters from the other two series into the action quickly. Its appeal is the change in scale: the emergency is shared across the One Chicago world, so interactions between Fire, Med and P.D. characters are part of the momentum rather than a brief crossover cameo.

That breadth comes with a structural trade-off. As the first act of a three-part story, the episode has to establish the larger crisis and hand its unresolved threads to the next installments. Frederick’s central reservation is exposition: the setup can make the hour feel more like an opening chapter than a complete Chicago Fire story. That is her assessment of the episode’s shape, not a measure of audience consensus.
Spoilers: the emergency and cliffhanger
Spoilers for the episode’s major peril beats: The episode-guide synopsis describes Firehouse 51, Chicago P.D. and Gaffney responding to a high-rise gas explosion with multiple casualties. Pascal and Severide suspect a high-stakes robbery. The synopsis says the hour ends with Trudy Platt seriously wounded and Stella Kidd and Adam Ruzek trapped after another explosion. NBC’s official clip list also flags Trudy being shot and Kidd trapped in a train tunnel; those clip titles corroborate the danger, though they do not establish every detail of the episode’s sequence.

Those threats give the opener a clear handoff: the crisis is not neatly resolved within the Fire hour, and the next chapters inherit immediate danger as well as the wider emergency. The available plot synopsis is from a third-party episode guide, so its detailed account should be read as a secondary-source description.
Does the crossover scale work?
On Frederick’s account, it works best as a launch. The rapid involvement of characters from all three shows creates urgency and gives the event a sense of shared stakes. The same design makes the opener less independent: viewers are being positioned for Med and P.D. to carry the story forward, and the exposition required to set that up is the review’s clearest drawback.

A useful way to judge the full crossover is to ask whether each episode advances the emergency, uses visiting characters naturally, explains enough for its own audience without slowing the action, and ends with a handoff that makes the next chapter feel necessary. Those are comparison criteria, not a ranking of the later episodes; the available review covers the Fire opener rather than evaluating the complete event.
