Otis’s final words to Cruz mean, “Brother, I will be with you always.” He says them in Russian as he is dying after the mattress factory fire. Cruz does not understand them at the bedside; Chief Boden translates them later at Otis’s memorial.
What does Otis say to Cruz before he dies?
In the Season 8 premiere of Chicago Fire, Otis is dying from injuries sustained in the mattress factory fire, with Cruz beside him. Otis speaks to Cruz in Russian. The episode later gives the line’s meaning through Boden: “Brother, I will be with you always.”

The memorial scene supplies the translation rather than the bedside exchange. The series’ explanation is the basis for the English wording; the available scene account does not independently establish a professional, word-for-word linguistic gloss.
Why do Otis’s last words matter to Cruz?
Just before Otis replies, Cruz asks him to save a place for him in the better place where Otis is going. Heard in that context, the words comfort Cruz: Otis is telling him that their bond will continue beyond death. That is an interpretation of the episode’s scene, not a separately stated explanation of writer intent.

“Brother” also connects their friendship to the firehouse family. At the memorial, Boden describes Brian—Otis’s given name—as a brother, friend, and “hell of a firefighter.” He asks the crew to tell the story of who Brian was, making remembrance an active way to keep Otis present among them. The scene ends by treating the memorial site as sacred ground.
Why does Otis speak Russian?
The episode presents Russian as the language of Otis’s cryptic final message; the meaning is intentionally withheld from Cruz at the bedside and disclosed later at the memorial. In a September 25, 2019 interview, showrunner Derek Haas said the idea came from Arthur Forney, the show’s head of post, after Haas had begun writing the episode. Forney suggested that Otis say something cryptic in Russian as he was dying, and Haas said he saw the strength of the idea and used it.
What Joe Minoso said about filming the scene
In an October 1, 2019 interview with TV Insider, Joe Minoso said the death and final-words sequence was especially difficult to film because it was the last scene he and Yuriy Sardarov shot together as Cruz and Otis. Minoso described their connection as “brother-in-arms” and said Cruz had lost a big part of himself. Those are Minoso’s reflections on the scene and the actors’ working relationship.

Boden explains the words at Otis’s memorial, after asking who will remember firefighters’ work after they are gone. He tells the crew to share the story of Brian’s life and character, then translates the final words: “Those are Brian’s last words, and they mean, ‘Brother, I will be with you always.’”
