Cher remembered Val Kilmer as a funny, difficult, brilliant friend in a tribute posted on X on April 2, 2025, the day after his death. She praised his performance as Mark Twain and his bravery during illness, recalling a friendship that continued long after their romance ended.
What Cher said about Val Kilmer
In the post reported by Us Weekly, Cher opened by calling Kilmer “Valus,” a nickname from their dating years. She wrote, “Will miss u,” and described him as a “Funny, crazy, pain in the ass, GREAT FRIEND.”

She also praised his work, writing that he was “BRILLIANT as Mark Twain,” and recognized his courage during illness: “BRAVE here during ur sickness.” Read together, the playful description and the words of admiration frame the tribute as affectionate, not hostile.
How their relationship became a lasting friendship
Cher and Kilmer dated from 1982 to 1984, according to Us Weekly. They met at one of Cher’s birthday parties. Cher later recalled that they first connected by laughing at the same things: “We became friends because we laughed at the same things constantly.”

The relationship ended, but the friendship did not. Kilmer wrote in his 2020 memoir, I’m Your Huckleberry, that Cher supported him during his illness in 2015. Us Weekly quotes his account: “Cher stepped in and stepped up.”
Cher also said during a November 2024 appearance on The Howard Stern Show that she had been madly in love with Kilmer and that he ended their relationship, as reported by Us Weekly. Her tribute recalled the bond that remained after that breakup.

The Associated Press reported that Kilmer died in Los Angeles on April 1, 2025, at age 65, from pneumonia, citing his daughter, Mercedes Kilmer. He had been diagnosed with throat cancer in 2014 and underwent two tracheotomies, according to the AP obituary.
Cher’s reference to Kilmer as brilliant as Mark Twain appears to point to Citizen Twain, his one-man show in which he portrayed the author and humorist. The tribute paired that praise for his performance with recognition of what he endured while ill.
