Cheng Pei-pei, the Hong Kong wuxia star who played Jade Fox in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, died at home on July 17, 2024, at 78. Her family announced her death on July 19. Who was Cheng Pei-pei?
Cheng was a leading performer in the Hong Kong wuxia film cycle of the 1960s. Wuxia stories center on martial heroes, often using stylized swordplay and physical performance to bring their world to life. Cheng’s roles as swordswomen made her one of the era’s most recognizable women in the genre. She is sometimes described as a contender for the title of first female action star, but that distinction is contested; “pioneering wuxia star” is the more precise description. (The Guardian, 2024)
Born in Shanghai, Cheng joined her family in Hong Kong in 1962 and entered the Shaw Brothers studio’s actors’ training program. Her preparation included sword, knife and pole fighting, as well as horse riding. Ballet training helped shape the rhythm and expressiveness of her movement. Cheng once said, “I just wanted to be a dancer. Because you don’t need to talk to express yourself, I could use my body,” in an interview with Kung Fu magazine cited by The Guardian. How did ‘Come Drink with Me’ make her a star?
Director King Hu cast Cheng as Golden Swallow in Come Drink with Me (1966), the role The Guardian says launched her as a star. The film established the screen presence that carried through her early career: a swordswoman whose authority came not just from the story’s dialogue, but from controlled, legible physical action. The Guardian reports that she made about 20 feature films for Shaw Brothers. Among her notable titles were Princess Iron Fan (1966), Golden Swallow (1968) and The Lady Hermit (1971). Her insistence on performing the same window jump as the male actors in Golden Swallow offers a glimpse of how she approached those roles. Recalling that a production figure told her women should be “more refined,” Cheng said she refused to accept a different standard and threatened to leave unless she could make the jump. What happened after her early Hong Kong film career?
Cheng left acting in the mid-1970s after marrying in 1970 and moved to the United States. She returned to Hong Kong films in the late 1980s, including with Painted Faces (1988), and later appeared in Flirting Scholar (1993). Her route back to a major screen role ran through her own Los Angeles cable television program, Pei-pei’s Time: after interviewing Ang Lee, she was persuaded to play Jade Fox in his film Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Why is Jade Fox her best-known international role?
In Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000), Cheng played Jade Fox, a formidable fighter whose place in the story differs from the heroic swordswomen she had played in 1960s wuxia. The role brought her to a much wider international audience, introducing viewers to a performer with decades of martial-arts cinema behind her. The film won four Academy Awards, according to the Associated Press report republished by the Los Angeles Times. That report gives its North American box office as $128.1 million; The Guardian separately reports $218 million worldwide. These figures describe different territories and should not be conflated. What films did Cheng Pei-pei make later in her career?
Cheng continued working across different kinds of screen roles after the international success of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Her later credits included Lilting (2014), Meditation Park and Disney’s live-action Mulan (2020), in which she played the matchmaker. The Taipei Times described Mulan as her most recent film role. Cheng’s family said she had a neurodegenerative atypical parkinsonism syndrome and that treatment could not slow its progression. The Guardian identified the condition as corticobasal degeneration and reported that she was diagnosed in 2019.
