The new Sons of Anarchy-related project with Charlie Hunnam is Legends, an FX limited series that reunites several original cast members as fictionalized versions of themselves. Hunnam says it is “definitely not season eight”: the story follows the cast at a fan convention, where a real-world threat turns their reunion into a meta-thriller. The Hollywood Reporter reported the announcement and Hunnam’s comments on September 10, 2026.
What is the new Sons of Anarchy project called?
It is called Legends. FX announced the limited series on August 19, 2026; The Hollywood Reporter’s September 10 report described its premise and cast. The key distinction is that the actors are not simply returning to continue the fictional story of Jax Teller and the motorcycle club. They play fictionalized versions of themselves.

Hunnam played Jax in the original series, which ended in 2014 after seven seasons. FX’s character page identifies Hunnam as Jackson “Jax” Teller.
Is Charlie Hunnam returning as Jax?
Not according to the reported premise. Hunnam is part of Legends as a version of himself, rather than as Jax in a straightforward continuation of the character’s story. He told The Hollywood Reporter, “All I can say is that it’s definitely not season eight of Sons of Anarchy.”

Hunnam described the setup as the same group of actors coming together after years apart to go on an adventure. The reunion takes place at a fan convention, where a real-world threat blurs the line between the cast’s public identities and their famous roles. That makes Legends a self-aware thriller built around the show’s legacy, not a conventional sequel about the club.
Who is returning, and who is making the series?
The actors announced as returning alongside Hunnam are Ron Perlman, Katey Sagal, Maggie Siff, Mark Boone Junior, Tommy Flanagan, Kim Coates and Theo Rossi. They are expected to play fictionalized versions of themselves. The September 10 report said additional casting had yet to be announced.

Hunnam and Jonathan Groff developed the idea, and Groff is the showrunner. FX Productions and 20th Television are producing the limited series. The reported plan is for it to air on FX and stream on Hulu.
Is Sons of Anarchy creator Kurt Sutter involved?
No. The Hollywood Reporter said Sutter is not involved with Legends. He did give Hunnam his blessing after Hunnam approached him during the pitch process. Sutter’s comment, as reproduced in the report, was: “I’m not involved with Legends at all, nor should I be.”
