At launch, Warner Music Ireland described its concept as a playful challenge to gender stereotypes in music videos and film. That is the creators’ stated framing; what the video’s images mean beyond it is a matter of interpretation.
What is the “Boys” video?
It is the official music video for Charli XCX’s 2017 single “Boys,” rather than another work with the same title. Warner Music Ireland announced the single and its self-directed video together on 28 July 2017, crediting Jerker Hansson and Cass Lowe as collaborators on the song. Warner Music Ireland’s announcement calls the video commissioned and directed by Charli XCX alongside Sarah McColgan.
Its release date depends on the market and source: Apple Music’s US catalog lists the single as released on 26 July 2017, while Warner Music Japan gives 27 July 2017 as the digital release date in Japan. The US listing identifies Asylum Records UK, a division of Atlantic Records UK, and describes a one-song release with a two-minute duration. Apple Music’s US catalog entry and Warner Music Japan’s notice therefore do not establish one universal release date.
What idea did the video set out to explore?
Warner Music Ireland said the video “playfully challenges gender stereotypes in music videos/film.” That is the label announcement’s account of the concept, not proof of a single definitive reading. A viewer might interpret the premise as turning familiar ways of presenting men in popular video into the focus, but the available credits and announcement do not document individual shots or establish how each scene should be read.

Charli XCX’s statement in the same announcement gives a sense of her enthusiasm for the project: “Boys is my favourite music video I’ve ever made. I just wanna say a big thanks to all the boys involved, for totally embracing and understanding my vision and being excited by the concept p.s. no boys were harmed in the making of this video.”
Who appears in the video?
Warner Music Japan reported that 62 male figures appear in the video. Its examples include Charlie Puth, Diplo, Wiz Khalifa, Ty Dolla $ign, G-Eazy, Joe Jonas, Oliver Sykes, Taka of ONE OK ROCK, and EXILE SHOKICHI. The notice presents examples, not a complete roster; its figure is the label’s reported count. Warner Music Japan’s 28 July 2017 notice supplies the count and names.

How was “Boys” described later?
Atlantic Records’ 2021 biography retrospectively called “Boys” a “standout summer crush anthem” among Charli XCX’s 2017 releases. That is the label’s promotional description, not evidence of a broader critical consensus. Atlantic Records’ 2021 biography provides that characterization.
