Who was Charles Cyphers?
Born July 28, 1939, in Niagara Falls, New York, Cyphers built a long career as a character actor in film and television. The Television Academy records his death on August 4, 2024, and lists credits ranging from studio films to guest roles across many television series. Television Academy biography
He died in Tucson, Arizona, after a brief illness, according to The Hollywood Reporter obituary republished by Yahoo. His manager, Chris Roe, announced his death. Roe remembered him as “an incredibly lovable and sensitive man” and described him as “a close friend and client for over 20 years.” Obituary report
Cyphers played Sheriff Leigh Brackett in three Halloween films
Cyphers first appeared as Sheriff Leigh Brackett in John Carpenter’s Halloween (1978). He returned in Halloween II (1981) and, decades later, Halloween Kills (2021). The Hollywood Reporter described the span between his first and third appearances as 43 years. Obituary report

A recurring collaborator with John Carpenter
Brackett was one part of a broader working relationship between Cyphers and Carpenter. Their collaborations included Assault on Precinct 13 (1976), the television films Somebody’s Watching Me! and Elvis, The Fog (1980), Halloween II (1981), and Escape from New York (1981). Carpenter’s remembrance, reproduced in the obituary report, called Cyphers “an early and frequent collaborator with me on my early movies.” Obituary report

Film and television work beyond Halloween
Cyphers’s selected credits also include Honkytonk Man, Major League, Loaded Weapon 1, and Murder in the First. The Television Academy biography notes that he appeared as a guest actor on numerous television series. These credits reflect a career that extended well beyond his best-known horror-film role.
