There is no reliable, comparable ranking of the “eight most expensive charities” associated with Meryl Streep. The available records identify organizations she has supported and selected gifts by Streep or the Silver Mountain Foundation for the Arts, but they do not rank eight charities by expenses or by the amount she gave them.
The clearest recent major gift is a seven-figure contribution to the National Women’s History Museum, announced in March 2026. Other sources name supported organizations and report grants for particular years; many do not disclose an amount.

What “most expensive” means—and what the records show
“Most expensive charities” could mean organizations with the highest operating costs, or those that received the largest gifts from Streep. The sources available establish neither ranking. Charity expenses and a donor’s gifts are different measures, and the reported grants below cover different years and giving vehicles.
A more accurate account is to separate the museum’s reported gift, grants attributed to the Silver Mountain Foundation for the Arts, and organizations listed by institutions as supported by Streep. A mention of support does not by itself establish a personal donation or its value.

The National Women’s History Museum: a seven-figure gift
On March 17, 2026, the National Women’s History Museum announced a seven-figure gift from Streep. The museum said the contribution would advance its digital-first work on women’s history and establish the Meryl Streep Educator Award. The announcement did not specify a more exact amount. It quoted Streep: “History is shaped not only by those who make it, but by those who ensure it is remembered.” (National Women’s History Museum, March 17, 2026)
The museum later announced that Streep would serve as honorary chair of its November 6, 2026 Women Making History Awards Gala. That announcement is event context, not a report of another gift. (National Women’s History Museum, August 11, 2026)

Reported Silver Mountain Foundation grants
Inside Philanthropy’s August 12, 2026 profile associates the Silver Mountain Foundation for the Arts with Streep and sculptor Donald Gummer. It describes grantmaking in both the arts and other fields, including women’s organizations, reproductive health, higher education, climate and conservation, journalism, humanitarian aid, healthcare, and community organizations. The profile reports selected grants, not a complete ranking of the foundation’s recipients. (Inside Philanthropy, August 12, 2026)
| Recipient | Reported grant | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Planned Parenthood Federation of America | $50,000 | Reported as a 2024 foundation grant by Inside Philanthropy in its 2026 profile. |
| Vassar College | $25,000 | Reported as a 2024 foundation grant by Inside Philanthropy in its 2026 profile. |
| Duke University; Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism; New York Women in Film & Television; Equality Now; National Domestic Workers Alliance; Women for Women International; Women’s Refugee Commission; Vital Voices | Amount not stated in source | Named as other recent foundation recipients in Inside Philanthropy’s 2026 profile; no specific grant year or amount is attached to these examples there. |
Other organizations Streep has been associated with
The National Women’s History Museum’s biography lists the Climate Emergency Fund, the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), Women for Women International, Equality Now, the museum itself, the Committee to Protect Journalists, Donor Direct Action, Partners in Health, Kageno, and the Innocence Project among organizations Streep has supported. The biography does not give amounts for these organizations or present the list as a complete record of her lifetime giving. (National Women’s History Museum biography)

- After decades of marriage, a devoted couple (Meryl Streep and Tommy Lee Jones) tries couple?s counseling in order to spice things up and reconnect.
The same biography describes Streep’s environmental advocacy through Mothers and Others, a consumer advocacy group she co-founded in 1989 under NRDC’s aegis. It says the group worked for ten years on sustainable agriculture, pesticide regulations, and access to organic and sustainably grown local food.
Indiana University’s honoree profile separately lists public support for the American Foundation for AIDS Research, Artists for Peace and Justice, Equality Now, Healthy Child Healthy World, St. Francis Food Pantries and Shelters, and Women in the World Foundation. This is an institutional list of support, not a financial schedule. (Indiana University Honors and Awards)

Historical grants: useful examples, not current rankings
Older reporting gives further examples, but the dates matter. Forbes reported in January 2012 that Silver Mountain Foundation for the Arts had given $100,000 each to Oxfam America and Partners in Health, and $1,225,000 to Vassar College. The report said the foundation’s grantmaking in the year it covered exceeded $2.1 million. These are historical figures and should not be read as current grants or compared as a present-day ranking with awards reported for 2024. (Forbes, January 11, 2012)
In March 2012, CBS News and the Associated Press reported two separate gifts of $10,000 each: one to a Rhode Island Upward Bound scholarship fund and one to the Segue Institute for Learning. Both were made in honor of Viola Davis. The report does not establish these as foundation grants. (CBS News / Associated Press, March 1, 2012)

How to read the amounts
- A stated gift is not a full giving history. The museum’s seven-figure figure and the named grants are specific disclosures, not evidence of everything Streep or the foundation has given.
- Distinguish the donor from the grantmaker. Some reports attribute grants to Silver Mountain Foundation for the Arts; other sources describe Streep’s support more broadly.
- Keep dates attached to figures. The foundation’s reported 2024 grants and Forbes’ 2012 figures refer to different periods, so they do not establish a current order of recipients.
- Do not confuse charity costs with donations. None of these sources supplies comparable operating-expense figures for eight organizations.
