Chappell Roan said she yelled back at a photographer during the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards red carpet because the crowded scene felt overwhelming and she experiences anxiety when people yell at her. An off-camera voice had said, “Shut the f*** up”; the reason for that remark, its intended target and the photographer’s identity were not established in contemporary reports.
What happened on the VMAs red carpet?
The exchange took place on September 11, 2024, outside UBS Arena in Elmont, New York, as Roan made her VMAs debut. Contemporary accounts report that an off-camera voice said, “Shut the f*** up.” Roan responded, “You shut the f*** up. No, not me, b***h.” The Los Angeles Times reported that the reason for the first remark was unclear; the available accounts do not establish who it was directed at or identify the photographer. Why did Chappell Roan yell back?
In a red-carpet interview with Entertainment Tonight, Roan described the situation as frightening and said yelling triggers anxiety for her. As quoted by the Los Angeles Times, she said: “This is quite overwhelming and quite scary. I think for someone who gets a lot of anxiety around people yelling at you, the carpet is horrifying and I yelled back. You don’t get to yell at me like that.” Her explanation was that the carpet felt overwhelming and that she did not accept being yelled at.
The Independent also reproduced her explanation, with differences in punctuation and an ellipsis. The quotation above follows the Los Angeles Times rendering; punctuation should not be treated as a verified verbatim transcript of the interview video. The Independent

- Bold pop hooks, sex positivity, honest songwriting and a heavy dose of glitter make up the world of Chappell Roan, the next multi-faceted force in pop music
How do her earlier comments about boundaries fit?
In August 2024, Roan had publicly objected to the idea that admiration entitles strangers to her attention or physical access. The Los Angeles Times quoted her saying: “I do not agree with the notion that I owe a mutual exchange of energy, time, or attention to people I do not know, do not trust, or who creep me out — just because they’re expressing admiration.” It also quoted her statement that “Women do not owe you a reason why they don’t want to be touched or talked to.”
Those comments offer context for her public views on personal boundaries. The reporting does not establish that she made them specifically about the VMAs photographer or this exchange. Los Angeles Times
