Challengers is less a tennis procedural than a volatile relationship drama that uses professional sport to sharpen its conflicts. Zendaya’s Tashi Duncan is the film’s forceful center: a former prodigy whose ambition and influence make her more than a prize in the rivalry between two men. Luca Guadagnino turns their tangled history into a stylish, teasingly erotic contest of ego, loyalty and control.
What is Challengers about?
Tashi Duncan (Zendaya), once a tennis prodigy, becomes a coach and marries champion Art Donaldson (Mike Faist). When Art hits a losing streak, she enters him in a challenger event. There he must face Patrick (Josh O’Connor), his former best friend and Tashi’s former boyfriend. MGM’s synopsis establishes the setup, while the film fills in the trio’s history through earlier encounters that intercut with the present-day match.

That structure gives the match a dramatic charge beyond its score. Every exchange carries the weight of old attraction, resentment and competition. The film builds toward the match’s culmination without making the sport a mere backdrop: the game is where these characters’ private struggle becomes visible.
Is it a tennis movie or a relationship drama?
It is both, but its strongest interest is in the relationships. Tennis gives the film a vocabulary of momentum, pressure and strategic positioning; the love triangle gives those ideas emotional stakes. Rather than explain the sport as a procedural, Guadagnino uses its rhythms and rituals to stage a contest among people who know how to read one another and still cannot control what they feel.

The result is closer to a character drama staged inside professional tennis than a conventional sports story. The match matters, but so do the histories and power shifts that make each point feel personal.
Zendaya’s performance makes Tashi the center of the contest
The title’s claim that Zendaya is at her best is a critical judgment, not an industry consensus; the case for it is in how she plays Tashi’s contradictions. Tashi is driven and exacting, but not reducible to ambition. She shapes Art’s career and exerts a powerful pull on Patrick, yet the film’s tension comes from the limits of that control as much as from her influence.

That makes Tashi more than a conventional muse between two rivals. She has her own relationship to talent, success and the career she did not get to pursue as a player. Zendaya gives her composure and force while allowing vulnerability and calculation to sit uneasily together. Faist and O’Connor make the old friendship and present rivalry feel lived-in, but the film’s shifting balance keeps returning attention to Tashi.
How erotic is Challengers?
The film is intensely suggestive, but it is not built around explicit sexual content. Its erotic charge comes through glances, proximity, flirtation, rivalry and the way desire gets tangled with ambition. The Associated Press described the film’s mix of lust, fractured relationships, infidelity and egos, while cautioning that viewers expecting explicit scenes may find it more teasing than the marketing or premise implies.
That teasing is part of the method: the film makes attraction feel like another form of competition, with no clean boundary between wanting someone and wanting to win.
Style, pacing and the score
Guadagnino gives the film an emphatic visual and sonic identity. The flashbacks and present-day match create a shifting pace, delaying the full shape of the trio’s history while repeatedly returning to the court. The heightened style can sometimes make the emotional landscape feel more vivid than the connective tissue of the story, but the build toward the final match keeps the central conflict in view without revealing its outcome.
Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross’s score is a major part of that momentum. Milan Records describes the 16-track collection as rooted in the filmmakers’ interest in techno and electronic music; the Associated Press likewise singled out the synth-driven sound. It gives the film a pulse that feels closer to club music than traditional sports scoring, helping turn the match into an event of pressure and desire. Milan Records also links to the Challengers score on vinyl; that page does not establish current stock or price.

The film is persuasive about tennis culture and less consistent as a display of elite match play. A May 2024 report from the WTA records professionals praising the atmosphere, clothing and equipment, while also noting criticism of the specific tennis action. Laura Robson, then part of Wimbledon’s international player relations team, praised the period detail, saying, “The fact that the outfits and the equipment were all relevant to that time period,”—a fragment quoted mid-thought. She also put the performance challenge plainly: “You’re never going to have an actress who can hit the ball like Aryna Sabalenka.”

Daria Kasatkina, by contrast, found the tennis action difficult to watch as a professional player, according to the WTA report. Those reactions can coexist: period-specific tenniscore and the surrounding world of the sport can feel carefully observed even when the on-court execution does not satisfy a player’s technical eye.
Verdict
Challengers succeeds because its tennis and its relationship drama feed each other. Its charged triangle gives the match stakes, while the match’s tactics and pressure give the characters a physical language for their rivalry. Zendaya anchors the film as a compelling, ambitious Tashi; the teasing eroticism, forceful style and electronic score make the ride distinctive, even when the tennis itself is more stylized than technically convincing.
Apple TV’s U.S. listing identifies the film as a 2024 drama/romance directed by Luca Guadagnino, with a runtime of 2 hours 11 minutes (131 minutes) and an R rating. Ratings and availability can vary by territory.
