What was the Chainsaw Man April Fools’ plot twist?
In Chapter 198, the identities readers associated with Fami and Death are switched. ComicBook.com’s April 1, 2025 spoiler report describes the reveal as the young girl believed to be Death actually being Famine, with Fami revealed as Death. The distinction matters: it is not simply a new character being introduced, but a reversal of assumptions about two characters already central to the story’s threat and mystery.
Why the reveal feels like a prank
The names set up the wrong expectation
Readers have a ready-made association between Fami and Famine. Against that expectation, the ominous girl appears to fit the role of Death. The reversal turns those assumptions against the audience: the labels readers trusted were not reliable guides to who was who.
The twist changes how earlier scenes read
Once the identities are reversed, earlier impressions of both characters invite a second look. That retrospective effect is part of the twist’s force: a reader can revisit what seemed obvious and see how expectation shaped the interpretation. This describes the effect of the reveal, not a documented statement about Fujimoto’s intentions.

“April Fools’ joke” is a fan reading, not a confirmed plan
A Chainsawfolk discussion on April 1 captured one fan’s reaction with the line, “Fujimoto’s April Fool’s joke is that he fooled us all.” That wording is useful as an example of how the reveal was framed by readers. It does not establish that the creator planned the reveal as an April Fools’ prank, or that this interpretation represents fans generally.
What the dates do—and do not—establish
ComicBook.com published its spoiler report on April 1, 2025. VIZ’s search listing associates Chapter 198 with April 8, 2025, though the chapter page redirected to the broader series listing when opened. Those are different dates: the report’s publication date is clear in the cited account, while the chapter date comes from VIZ’s listing and should be treated with care. Neither supports saying the chapter definitively released on April 1 in every region or on every platform.

Where to read the chapter
VIZ identifies Chainsaw Man as a manga created by Tatsuki Fujimoto and provides chapter navigation. Its series page notes that free-chapter access through MANGA Plus by SHUEISHA depends on location. VIZ also lists collected volumes and a box set, but the available information here does not establish which collected volume contains Chapter 198.
