The scene is meant to be repulsive; its ethical discomfort matters too. That is an argument about how to read the character—not proof that anime fans generally excuse her behavior.
What happens in Himeno’s scene with Denji?
At a gathering after a mission, Himeno gets drunk and kisses Denji, then vomits into his mouth. Ranker describes the anime moment this way in its list of uncomfortable anime scenes: Ranker’s description of the scene. The episode makes the encounter grotesque through its physical details, but the shock should not eclipse the underlying question: Denji is a teenager, and Himeno is an adult coworker who initiates the kiss while intoxicated.

The scene is not a model of mutual, clear-headed consent. Himeno’s intoxication is relevant to understanding her judgment, but it does not make the moment romantic or erase the imbalance between an adult and a teenage colleague. Denji’s own awkwardness and inexperience also matter; the fact that he is not shown responding with clear resistance does not turn the encounter into an admirable courtship.
Why can Himeno still be an appealing character?
A character’s appeal and the morality of a particular action are different questions. Viewers may respond to Himeno’s humor, design, performance, grief, or role in the story. Those qualities can make her memorable without making her behavior toward Denji acceptable.

Chainsaw Man builds its world around damaged people making compromised choices. Nippon.com frames the series as a blood-drenched antihero story and discusses responses to its storytelling: Nippon.com on Chainsaw Man. That context can help explain why a character is compelling; it is not a blanket defense of what she does. A story can invite empathy for someone’s pain while still showing the harm, carelessness, or bad judgment in their actions.
What does “romanticizing” the scene get wrong?
Romanticizing turns a troubling encounter into evidence of desirable chemistry, treating the kiss as a funny or exciting milestone instead of a boundary-crossing act. The vomit may dominate the scene as gross-out comedy, but separating that gag from the circumstances of the kiss makes the ethical issue disappear. The more useful reading holds both in view: it is disgusting, and the adult’s drunken advance toward a teenager is not a healthy romantic ideal.

That distinction does not require viewers to dislike Himeno, or to demand that every flawed character be condemned in every conversation. It asks for precision. You can admire an actor’s work, enjoy a character’s scenes, or discuss why the writing makes her vivid without describing the kiss as desirable, harmless, or proof of a meaningful romance.
Does the fandom actually romanticize Himeno?
The available evidence does not establish how common that view is among anime fans. A Reddit discussion shows that viewers disagree about character writing, but an individual thread is anecdotal, not a representative measure of fandom opinion: the fan discussion. So the fair claim is not that all—or even most—fans romanticize Himeno. It is that when a discussion does frame this scene as romantic, it is worth challenging that framing.

Official and industry-adjacent commentary offers broader context, not a verdict on this specific moment. Manga Plus interviewed Yuji Kaku, a former assistant to Tatsuki Fujimoto, about character creation, and describes the series’ distinctive dialogue and worldview: Manga Plus on character creation. A separate Crunchyroll voice-actor interview discusses Power and Makima rather than Himeno, so it should not be treated as evidence of what Himeno’s scene means: Crunchyroll’s voice-actor interview. Neither source establishes what fans generally think about her.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to discuss a flawed character without excusing the harm
- Name the action plainly. Himeno kisses Denji while drunk; the scene is not simply a quirky romantic beat.
- Keep explanation separate from justification. Her grief, drinking, or circumstances may help explain her conduct, but they do not make the encounter admirable.
- Talk about the character’s appeal on its own terms. Humor, visual design, performance, and narrative function can be praised without praising the kiss.
- Avoid claiming to speak for the fandom. A handful of posts cannot show what anime fans as a whole believe.
This reading preserves what makes Himeno interesting while refusing to turn a disturbing scene into a relationship ideal. Liking a morally compromised character is not the same as endorsing every choice she makes; romanticizing the kiss is a separate choice, and one viewers can reject.
