The Gun Devil is a fear-powered antagonist whose extraordinary speed and widespread gunfire make it one of the story’s most destructive threats. The manga shows how dangerous it is, but does not provide an objective ranking against every devil.
Who is the Gun Devil?
Chainsaw Man, created by Tatsuki Fujimoto, follows Denji, a young devil hunter whose bond with Pochita, the Chainsaw Devil, changes his life. The Gun Devil is a major antagonist associated with fear of firearms. Its threat drives important parts of the Public Safety story and gives Aki Hayakawa a deeply personal reason to pursue it. VIZ’s official series page introduces the series and its premise.
The Gun Devil’s significance is not limited to its destructive ability. Its role in the story shapes Aki’s choices, and later developments connect it to Aki’s fate as the Gun Fiend. Those events make the Gun Devil central to the arc’s emotional stakes as well as its conflict. For the manga in its original context, readers can use VIZ’s official chapter index.
How powerful is the Gun Devil?
Its clearest demonstrated strengths are speed, range, and area damage. The manga depicts it unleashing gunfire over a broad area and causing immense loss of life in a short time. A fan-maintained reference gives the in-story toll as 1.2 million people in five minutes; that is a fictional event, not a real-world statistic, and should be checked against the licensed manga before being quoted as an exact passage. The fan reference is not an official publisher source.

Those feats establish the Gun Devil as an extreme danger to ordinary people and devil hunters. They do not, by themselves, settle how it would fare against every other devil. The manga does not provide a neutral numerical power scale or a definitive all-character ranking, so claims that the Gun Devil is categorically the strongest should be treated as interpretation rather than established canon.
How to compare the Gun Devil with other devils
A useful comparison sticks to observable dimensions rather than a single fan-made tier or score. Consider:
- Speed: What movement or attack speed does the story actually show?
- Range: How far can the character threaten opponents?
- Area damage: Can attacks affect a single target or a broad area?
- Durability: What damage can the character withstand?
- Encounter conditions: What limits, circumstances, or advantages shape the particular fight?
Keeping those axes separate makes it easier to distinguish a feat shown in the manga from an inference about who would win in a different matchup.

The Gun Devil’s role is part of the Public Safety arc. VIZ lists the Chainsaw Man: Public Safety Arc box set and provides an official chapter index for reading the manga. The anime character listing does not establish coverage of the manga events discussed here, so the manga is the clear route for following these specific developments. The official anime character page is available for reference, but does not provide the needed confirmation.
