Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc is the direct theatrical continuation of the first Chainsaw Man anime season. It follows Denji after he meets Reze, a café worker who seems to offer the ordinary affection he wants. As of August 11, 2026, the film is streaming on Crunchyroll in subtitled and dubbed formats, while Sony Pictures lists several digital viewing destinations. The story adapts the manga’s Reze/Bomb Girl storyline and combines romance, deception, supernatural horror, and high-impact action.
What Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc is
Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc is a theatrical sequel to the first television season, not a recap, remake, or spin-off. It continues Denji’s story after Season 1 and adapts the Reze, or Bomb Girl, portion of Tatsuki Fujimoto’s manga. The film shifts between awkward coming-of-age romance, espionage-style deception, supernatural horror, and explosive devil-hunting action.
Denji remains a member of Public Safety Special Division 4, with Pochita’s heart inside him and Chainsaw Man’s power at his disposal. Although Makima still occupies much of his attention, Denji’s routine changes when he meets Reze while sheltering from the rain. She works at a nearby café, treats him warmly, and becomes close to him with startling speed. That ordinary-looking encounter becomes the center of a much more dangerous conflict.

The spoiler-light story setup
Denji has achieved a version of the simple life he thought he wanted: food, shelter, employment, and the possibility of romance. It is not a peaceful life—he is still a devil hunter surrounded by violence—but his days have more structure than before. His encounter with Reze introduces an apparently different kind of future.

#1 Best Overall
The two meet during a rainstorm, and Reze’s kindness immediately stands out to Denji. Their connection develops through café and school imagery that feels almost separate from the grim world of Public Safety. That contrast is intentional. Reze represents the possibility of normal affection, but the film keeps asking whether Denji can recognize affection when nearly every relationship around him is shaped by power, secrecy, or someone else’s agenda.
That is why Reze should not be described as merely a conventional love interest. Her arrival tests Denji’s understanding of trust. The romantic premise is also a trapdoor into a story about hidden identities, competing allegiances, devil contracts, and the cost of treating a vulnerable person as a useful weapon—or allowing oneself to be treated that way.
Do you need to watch Season 1 first?
Yes. The recommended order is:
- Chainsaw Man television anime, Season 1
- Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc
The film assumes that viewers understand Denji’s relationship with Pochita, his work in Public Safety, his attachment to Makima, and his chaotic friendships with Aki and Power. It also brings back several characters from the television series, including Pochita, Makima, Aki Hayakawa, Power, Kobeni, Beam, the Violence Fiend, Angel Devil, and Kishibe.
A viewer could understand the basic rainstorm-and-café premise without Season 1, but the emotional stakes would be substantially weaker. Reze’s effect on Denji depends on knowing how badly he wants an ordinary life and how little experience he has separating genuine care from control.

Denji’s goals have always been unusually basic: a full stomach, a safe place to sleep, physical affection, and the chance to be wanted. The tragedy is that his lack of experience makes those wants easy to manipulate. He is powerful enough to fight devils, but emotionally he is still learning how to interpret other people.
Reze enters his life through the kind of situation Denji has been hoping for. She is approachable, interested in him, and apparently disconnected from the institutional pressures surrounding Public Safety. The film uses that apparent normality to create uncertainty. Denji is not simply deciding whether he likes someone; he is trying to determine whether the relationship is real, whether he is being used, and whether those two possibilities can coexist.
The result is a more complicated emotional conflict than a standard hero-versus-villain story. Reze’s presence forces Denji to confront the difference between wanting a person and wanting the feeling that person seems to promise. It also continues one of Chainsaw Man’s central ideas: Denji’s ordinary desires are never allowed to remain ordinary for long.

Production: why the story became a movie
Tatsuya Yoshihara directed the film at MAPPA. Hiroshi Seko wrote the screenplay, Kazutaka Sugiyama handled character design, Masato Nakazono served as assistant director, and Kensuke Ushio composed the music. Tatsuki Fujimoto is credited as the original creator, while MAPPA produced the animation and Toho handled Japanese distribution.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →MAPPA staff explained to Crunchyroll that the Reze storyline was selected for theatrical treatment because it has a particularly cinematic quality and could introduce the series to a wider audience. The aim was not simply to extend the television show by a few episodes. The film format gave the team room to focus on atmosphere, visual scale, and the distinctive mood of Fujimoto’s manga.
That choice fits the material. The story moves from quiet rain, fluorescent café interiors, school spaces, and hesitant conversation into large-scale destruction and violent supernatural combat. A feature-length structure lets the calm and the chaos sit beside each other instead of treating the quieter scenes as filler between fights.
Japanese cast and returning characters
The principal Japanese voice cast includes:
| Character | Japanese voice actor |
|---|---|
| Denji | Kikunosuke Toya |
| Pochita | Shiori Izawa |
| Makima | Tomori Kusunoki |
| Aki Hayakawa | Shogo Sakata |
| Power | Fairouz Ai |
| Kobeni | Karin Takahashi |
| Beam | Natsuki Hanae |
| Violence Fiend | Yūya Uchida |
| Angel Devil | Maaya Uchida |
| Kishibe | Kenjiro Tsuda |
| Reze | Reina Ueda |
The returning ensemble is important because Reze’s story does not take place in isolation. Denji’s new connection is constantly measured against the unstable found-family dynamic he has developed with Aki and Power, as well as the authority and danger represented by Makima and Kishibe.
Music: the songs in the film
Kenshi Yonezu performs the main theme, “IRIS OUT.” The ending theme, “JANE DOE,” is performed by Yonezu and Hikaru Utada. Maximum the Hormone’s “刃渡り2億センチ” also returns as an insert song in a film-specific edit.
The official music release is titled CHAINSAW MAN THE MOVIE: REZE ARC original soundtrack -summer’s end-. The listed Japanese release schedule includes the original soundtrack on September 19, 2025, a special edition on December 24, 2025, and an analog/vinyl edition on April 1, 2026. Edition names, retailer stock, pricing, and regional availability should be checked before purchasing, particularly for the vinyl release.
Collectors can also look for licensed film merchandise through official retail channels, including items such as a Reze figure and a Bomb Girl shirt. Store inventory changes, so those examples should not be treated as a permanent catalog.

Where to watch Reze Arc
Streaming
As of the dossier’s authoritative research date, August 11, 2026, the film is available to watch Reze Arc on Crunchyroll in both subtitled and dubbed formats. Crunchyroll announced April 30, 2026 as the streaming launch date.
Streaming catalogs are territory-dependent and can change. If the film does not appear in a particular country’s catalog, that does not necessarily mean it has been removed everywhere. Check the local Crunchyroll listing and confirm the available audio tracks before starting.
Digital purchase
If you prefer to buy Reze Arc digitally, Sony Pictures’ official film page lists digital destinations including Apple TV, Prime Video, Fandango at Home, YouTube, and Sony Pictures Core. The exact option may be a purchase or another digital-access format depending on the service and country. Price, resolution, subtitles, dubbed audio, and rental or ownership status should be verified on the live listing.
The film’s availability history is easy to misread because its theatrical rollout changed. It opened in Japan on September 19, 2025, with an international rollout beginning September 24. In the United States, the release was moved forward to October 24, 2025; older articles may still list the superseded October 29 date.
No U.S. Blu-ray or DVD release should be assumed from the digital listings alone. A physical-media date needs a separate official listing.
Manga reading guide
Read the source or continue after the movie
Chainsaw Man Vol. 6 is the most direct physical reading recommendation for the film’s central storyline. VIZ’s official description for Volume 6 specifically introduces Reze and describes the effect she has on Denji. It is the manga volume that introduces Reze, not a movie tie-in edition.

After finishing the film, continue with Chainsaw Man Vol. 7 and the later volumes. VIZ links Volume 7 and subsequent books from the Volume 6 page, establishing the practical continuation path. Because a film can compress, reorder, or omit material, readers should not assume that a volume number provides a scene-by-scene boundary for the adaptation.
Spoilers: Reze’s identity, the conflict, and the ending’s meaning
Stop here if you have not watched the film and want to remain spoiler-free.
Reze’s identity as a nearby café worker is not the whole truth. Her apparent civilian role conceals other allegiances, and the relationship with Denji becomes connected to a conflict involving devil contracts, manipulation, and the people seeking to control or exploit Chainsaw Man.
This revelation changes the meaning of the early romantic scenes. They are not simply the beginning of Denji’s first uncomplicated relationship. They are scenes in which Denji’s hopes and Reze’s hidden position occupy the same space. The film deliberately leaves the audience asking which moments are sincere, which are strategic, and whether sincerity can survive when both characters are caught inside larger forces.
Denji’s Chainsaw Man identity becomes central to the conflict. His attraction to Reze is therefore inseparable from the danger attached to him: he is not only a lonely teenager being pursued by someone he likes, but also the host of a power that enemies and institutions have strong reasons to target.
The immediate Reze conflict reaches a resolution, but the film is not a conclusion to Denji’s larger story. Its emotional outcome is best understood as another painful lesson in how difficult it is for Denji to distinguish affection from instrumental use. The ending does not transform the premise into a simple romance with a clean answer; it leaves the audience with the consequences of trust placed inside a violent, deceptive world, while the manga continues beyond the adapted material.

The film opened strongly in North America. The Associated Press reported an estimated $17.25 million opening weekend in the United States and Canada, based on Comscore figures, placing it first at the regional box office for that weekend. AP also reported an A CinemaScore from audiences and characterized the film as a self-contained adaptation combining a love story with violent action.
That figure is opening-weekend context only. It should not be presented as the movie’s final worldwide gross, lifetime ranking, or total theatrical performance.

For viewers who enjoyed Season 1, the film is the essential next chapter rather than optional side material. Its strongest feature is the way it makes Denji’s most ordinary wish—being liked by someone—feel as dangerous as any devil encounter. The action supplies the scale expected from a theatrical Chainsaw Man release, but the story’s lasting impact comes from the uncertainty underneath the romance.
Watch Season 1 first, then approach the film as a story about trust under pressure. If you want to compare the adaptation with Fujimoto’s original work, read Volume 6; if the film leaves you wanting the next part of Denji’s story, move into Volume 7 and the later manga.
