If Denji and Reze never become a conventional couple, what was the point of their encounter? In Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc, the answer is not simply that a romance ends in violence. Their connection gives Denji a chance to move beyond reacting to whatever attention or pleasure is in front of him—and to make a choice of his own.
Why the movie can feel like a romance that goes nowhere
One fan discussion put the frustration bluntly: “Seriously, what was the point of this movie if Denji and Reze technically never even met?” That is one viewer’s question, not proof that fans generally misunderstand the film. But it gets at a useful tension: if the story does not deliver a straightforward relationship, what does the relationship do for Denji?
The movie’s romance is not separate from its action or danger. Reze’s appeal and her capacity for violence are bound together, so Denji’s attraction does not lead him into a safe, uncomplicated future. The emotional force comes from giving him something to want—and then making his response to that desire matter.
Reze is the center of a story that is bigger than a date
Sony describes the 2025 film as a continuation of the anime: Denji meets Reze amid a conflict involving devils and hunters. The official description establishes the setup, but director Tatsuya Yoshihara’s account points to why Reze matters to the film’s design. In a 2025 interview with MANTANWEB, Yoshihara called Reze the story’s central theme and praised how the dramas of the other characters intertwine around her.

“The story has a central theme, Reze, and the way the dramas of the various characters intertwine around that theme is depicted so beautifully, with a clean beginning, development, twist, and conclusion.”
That framing makes Reze more than a romantic detour. The plot’s other conflicts orbit the encounter, while the encounter gives Denji a new kind of emotional situation to navigate.
Reze’s affection and danger are part of the same character
Creator Tatsuki Fujimoto has said he built Reze from traits he likes, including the quality that makes Denji think she may like him and a violent side that appears intermittently. That description supports reading her attraction and danger together rather than treating one as a disguise that cancels out the other. Her affection matters to Denji even as the threat surrounding her makes the connection unstable.

This is why reducing the film to “romance or action” misses the point. The romance gives the danger emotional stakes; the danger prevents the romance from becoming an easy reward. Denji is not simply choosing between a safe love story and a fight. He is forced to respond to a person who has drawn him in and who can also hurt him.

Denji’s change is about choosing, not winning Reze
At a Toho event, cast members described Denji as someone who begins by reacting passively and immediately, then moves toward making a decision himself. They connected that development to his meeting and confrontation with Reze. This is the cast’s interpretation, not an indisputable key supplied by the filmmakers, but it clarifies why the ending can matter even without a conventional romantic resolution.
On this reading, the important question is not whether Denji gets the relationship he wants. It is whether he can decide what to do when wanting something is no longer enough to guide him. His choice marks a shift from being carried along by appetite, attention, or circumstance toward taking responsibility for a decision.

Why Reze and Makima affect Denji differently
The cast also contrasted Denji’s dynamic with Makima and his dynamic with Reze. In their account, Makima is an object of aspiration, while Reze feels physically and emotionally closer to him. That distinction helps explain why Denji’s responses differ: one relationship is shaped by looking up to someone, the other by the possibility of mutual closeness.
This is a cast reading, not the only way to interpret either relationship. It does, however, sharpen the Reze Arc’s function: Denji encounters a form of connection that feels nearer and more personal, then has to decide how to act when that closeness collides with danger.

What the film’s scale does—and does not—tell you
The official film introduction says the manga had passed 30 million cumulative copies and was distributed in more than 200 countries and regions. The page does not show a publication date for those figures, so they should be understood as promotional figures printed there, not as independently verified 2026 totals. They speak to the franchise’s reach, but not to what every viewer thinks of the film.
