The couple married on July 1, 2013, at Château de la Napoule in Mandelieu, France. The date was Canada Day. A CBS News report on the wedding said they had become engaged in August 2012, after six months of dating.

How did they meet?
They met in March 2012 while working on Lavigne’s fifth studio album, according to CBS News’ 2015 report. Kroeger co-wrote and produced some songs on the album, which was released in 2013, and joined Lavigne on the duet “Let Me Go.” Lavigne described him as encouraging and said their shared experience as performers gave them a different understanding in the studio. Their work together overlapped with the beginning of their relationship; it does not show what later led to their separation.
When did they announce their separation?
On September 2, 2015, Lavigne announced the separation on Instagram. As reproduced by CBS News, she wrote: “We are still, and forever will be, the best of friends, and will always care deeply for each other.” She also referred to the memorable moments they had made through their marriage and music.

Did Avril Lavigne and Chad Kroeger get divorced?
The confirmed public event is their separation announcement, not a documented divorce finalization. A contemporaneous Los Angeles Times report said it was unclear whether they would divorce. The sources cited here do not establish whether a divorce was later finalized or provide a reliable filing or finalization date. It would therefore be inaccurate to present a specific legal date as confirmed.

The fact that the couple met through music, as well as other circumstances in either person’s life, is not evidence of why they separated. A 2014 Global News video page documents Kroeger addressing breakup rumors, but the page does not provide a transcript that supports attributing a particular quotation or position to him.
