In the days that followed, colleagues from across her career remembered her comic brilliance and the personal bonds they shared with her. At the September 14 Emmy Awards, another tribute recalled how her loss reached beyond the screen and into everyday encounters with audiences.
What was confirmed about Catherine O’Hara’s death?
O’Hara’s representatives initially said she had died “following a brief illness.” A Los Angeles County death certificate, reported by the Associated Press on February 9, listed pulmonary embolism as the immediate cause of death and rectal cancer as the underlying cause. The AP’s report clarified the cause after the initial announcement.
What did her co-stars and collaborators say?
The first tributes reflected relationships built over different eras of O’Hara’s career, from sketch comedy and film to Schitt’s Creek. The statements remembered not only a distinctive performer but also a friend, colleague and creative partner.
Macaulay Culkin remembered his on-screen mother
Culkin, who played O’Hara’s son in the Home Alone films, addressed her as “Mama” in an Instagram tribute reported by AP. He wrote: “I thought we had time. I wanted more. I wanted to sit in a chair next to you. I heard you. But I had so much more to say. I love you. I’ll see you later.” The words expressed a closeness that reached beyond their mother-and-son roles on screen.

Eugene Levy described knowing and working with O’Hara for more than fifty years, beginning at Second City and continuing through SCTV, films and Schitt’s Creek. He called their friendship the most important part of their working relationship. His son, Dan Levy, said O’Hara had been “extended family” before she played his character’s mother on the series.
Other colleagues remembered her generosity and comic gifts
Meryl Streep, O’Hara’s co-star in Heartburn, praised the “whipsmart compassion” she brought to the eccentrics she portrayed. Tributes reported by AP also came from Michael Keaton, Seth Rogen, Andrea Martin, Pedro Pascal and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, among others. How did the Emmy tribute describe her impact?
At the September 14, 2026 Emmy Awards, Culkin, Annie Murphy and Dan Levy honored O’Hara. Murphy, her Schitt’s Creek co-star, said, “Catherine’s laugh was a perpetual ‘yes, and,’” evoking the openness and playfulness she brought to performance.
Murphy also described the grief she encountered among strangers in Canada: one person left her a note on an Air Canada flight, while a gas-station attendant offered her a hug. She said these were only a few of the interactions that showed how profoundly O’Hara had affected people. Dan Levy urged performers and colleagues to let her experiment and create, saying that giving her space to do so could “change your life.”

Why did so many viewers feel connected to her?
O’Hara’s work reached audiences through different generations and formats: sketch comedy, films including Home Alone and Beetlejuice, and the television series Schitt’s Creek. That breadth helps explain why the tributes came from both professional peers and people who had encountered her characters in their own lives. The AP described her career as spanning five decades.
The documented response includes named statements, social-media posts reported by AP, and Murphy’s account of public encounters. It does not establish how many posts were made, how widely they circulated, or which platform saw the most engagement; those measures should not be inferred from the tributes reported.
