Their later gathering was not a second marriage but the larger wedding celebration pandemic restrictions had disrupted: a black-tie party in a bar, inspired by Gifford’s longtime favorite film, Sweet Home Alabama.
Why did Cassidy Gifford and Ben Wierda have two wedding events?
The couple got engaged in fall 2019 and had planned a larger wedding in Santa Barbara. When the COVID-19 crisis disrupted those plans, they decided to marry in Wierda’s native Michigan in June 2020 with close family. Gifford recalled their decision: “We’re going to do the dang thing anyway and get married.”
The first ceremony was deliberately casual. Gifford said she bought a sundress shortly beforehand, and the couple went barefoot in Wierda’s backyard. They later held a larger celebration in Nashville, where they had relocated during the pandemic, so they could gather with a wider circle of family and friends.

As Gifford told PEOPLE, being married for a year and a half before the Nashville event eased the pressure and helped them stay present: “In a weird way, having lived so much life together even before we got married and then having a year and a half under our belt already, it just removed so much pressure.”

Where was the second wedding celebration?
The October 10, 2021 celebration took place at Acme Feed & Seed, a bar, restaurant, and country music venue in downtown Nashville. The couple rented all four floors. The event combined the venue’s Southern food and nightlife setting with formal wedding details.
Gifford’s concept was “black-tie in a bar,” an idea she connected to Sweet Home Alabama: “Sweet Home Alabama has been my favorite movie forever, and I used to always say my dream wedding was black-tie in a bar.” The celebration had an autumnal look, with flowers by FLWR and planning by Beth Helmstetter of Beth Helmstetter Events. Guests could use a record-themed photo booth, try a whiskey tasting, and dance to a performance by The Steel Toe Stilettos.

What did Cassidy Gifford wear for her second wedding?
Gifford wore the Monique Lhuillier gown, veil, and heels she had bought before the pandemic disrupted the original plans. Wierda wore an RRL tuxedo. The formal outfits marked a sharp contrast with the first ceremony, where Gifford wore a simple off-the-rack dress and went barefoot, as described in Kathie Lee Gifford’s account.
How did the families take part in the celebration?
Family shaped the evening’s music and dances. Because Gifford’s father, Frank Gifford, had died in 2015, she could not have a father-daughter dance with him. Instead, she danced with her brother Cody to “What a Wonderful World.” Wierda’s father, Craig, joined them partway through. Wierda then danced with his mother, followed by the couple’s first dance.

Kathie Lee Gifford sang “When I Fall in Love” with soul singer Charles “Wigg” Walker. Cassidy recalled the dance with her brother and Wierda’s father joining them: “Needless to say, I was a mess of tears. It was very sweet.”

Tributes to Frank Gifford appeared throughout the celebration. The number 16, his football jersey number, was printed on table signs; tables were named for country music figures including Dolly Parton and Willie Nelson. Welcome bags included his favorite Dewar’s peanut butter chews, and Gifford wore earrings he had given Kathie Lee on their wedding day in 1986. The date of Wierda’s proposal, November 16, also echoed the number.

Gifford described the day to PEOPLE as “really special.” Its meaning came not only from the delayed party, but from the way the couple brought together the casual beginning of their marriage, the celebration they had postponed, and memories of family members who could not be there.
