The Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner ruled the manner of death suicide in its final determination, announced December 9, 2025. The department’s official finding distinguishes the medical cause from the manner of death.
What was Carrie Romney’s cause of death?
The medical cause was blunt traumatic injuries. The department said those injuries followed a fall from the rooftop of a parking structure in Valencia. It separately classified the manner of death as suicide. In medical examiner terminology, cause describes the injury or condition that resulted in death; manner classifies the circumstances surrounding it.
When was the determination made?
- October 10, 2025: Los Angeles County Fire Department paramedics pronounced Romney dead at 20:37, according to the medical examiner.
- October 11, 2025: A deputy medical examiner examined her.
- December 9, 2025: The department certified the cause and manner of death and announced its determination.
Why did early reports say the cause was pending?
In an October 14 report, ABC News said the cause had been listed as deferred while toxicology testing was pending and the investigation was ongoing. That described the preliminary status at the time, not a different final finding. The medical examiner later certified the cause and manner on December 9. ABC News’ October 14 report covered the earlier status.
Who was Carrie Romney?
Contemporaneous coverage identified Carrie Romney as the wife of Mitt Romney’s older brother, George Scott Romney. In a family statement reported by the Los Angeles Times on October 13, Mitt Romney said: “Our family is heartbroken by the loss of Carrie, who brought warmth and love to all our lives. We ask for privacy during this difficult time.” The statement expressed the family’s grief and request for privacy; it did not explain the circumstances or establish a motive. The Los Angeles Times reported the statement.
