Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy wore a pearl-colored, bias-cut silk crepe gown designed by Narciso Rodriguez for Cerruti 1881 at her September 21, 1996 wedding to John F. Kennedy Jr. on Georgia’s Cumberland Island. Later accounts have said last-minute alterations made her roughly two hours late. But Rosemarie Terenzio, Kennedy’s former assistant, challenged that version in a March 2026 interview. The dress is well documented; the cause and length of any delay are not established beyond dispute.
Who designed Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy’s wedding dress?
Narciso Rodriguez designed the gown for Cerruti 1881. The Los Angeles Times’ September 24, 1996 report, published three days after the wedding, identifies the designer and fashion house. Later coverage describes Rodriguez as Bessette-Kennedy’s friend and colleague.
The gown was a pearl-colored, bias-cut silk crepe dress. British Vogue describes it as a sleeveless slip with a cowl neck. These details—its restrained color, fluid cut and uncomplicated silhouette—are more firmly documented than many of the stories subsequently attached to the wedding.
What did she wear with the gown?
The contemporary Los Angeles Times account names a silk tulle veil and crystal-beaded silk satin sandals. Vogue’s later feature identifies the sandals as Manolo Blahnik and also describes sheer gloves. Photographer Denis Reggie recalled Bessette-Kennedy’s instruction when selecting an image for the press: “Show the dress. My dear friend designed the dress,” as quoted by Vogue.

Was Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy late because of dress alterations?
British Vogue, Vanity Fair and Biography.com repeat the account that last-minute adjustments to the gown led to an approximately two-hour delay. The contemporary Los Angeles Times report reviewed here documents the dress but does not substantiate that timing or connect alterations to a delay. The often-repeated two hours should therefore be treated as an attributed later account, not a verified arrival time.
In an interview published by Parade on March 4, 2026, Terenzio disputed the late-arrival version. She was involved in planning but says she did not attend the ceremony, so her account is not eyewitness testimony. She also questioned how to define lateness for a small wedding party gathered on the same island; the trip to the church involved a ride along the beach in a truck. Her perspective complicates the familiar story but does not independently establish an exact schedule.

- Documented: The wedding took place on September 21, 1996, at First African Baptist Church on Cumberland Island, Georgia. The contemporary Los Angeles Times report and British Vogue identify the date and venue.
- Documented: Rodriguez designed the pearl-colored, bias-cut silk crepe gown for Cerruti 1881.
- Repeated but not independently verified: Later features describe a roughly two-hour delay caused by last-minute alterations. The sources reviewed do not establish an exact arrival time.
- Contested: Terenzio’s 2026 account disputes that Bessette-Kennedy was actually late, while acknowledging she was not present at the ceremony.
For further context, Parade’s March 2026 interview with Terenzio presents her planning-insider account. British Vogue and Vanity Fair carry versions of the alteration-delay story; those accounts should be distinguished from the contemporary report rather than collapsed into a single certain explanation.
