Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy was the youngest of three daughters born to Ann and William Bessette. Her older sisters, Lauren and Lisa, were twins. Ann later married orthopedic surgeon Richard Freeman, the sisters’ stepfather. Lauren built a career in investment banking; the most specific public account of Lisa’s education is a 1996 report, not a record of her present life.
Who were Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy’s parents?
Carolyn’s parents were Ann and William Bessette. The JFK Hyannis Museum gives their fuller names as Anne Marie Messina Bessette and William Joseph Bessette in its institutional biography of Carolyn: JFK Hyannis Museum: Carolyn Jeanne Bessette-Kennedy.
Ann and William divorced while their daughters were young, but the accounts differ on when. A 1999 Los Angeles Times article says the twins were eight when their parents divorced; a Congressional Document memorial says Ann was pregnant with Carolyn. Because those accounts conflict, a specific year or sequence cannot be stated confidently. The sources also disagree about William’s occupation: Biography.com calls him an architectural engineer, while the Congressional Document memorial describes him as a cabinet salesman from White Plains. Neither description should be treated as settled without qualification.
Ann later married Richard Freeman, an orthopedic surgeon, who became Lauren, Lisa and Carolyn’s stepfather. The remarriage is noted in the Congressional Document memorial, Memorial Tributes, 106th Congress, Senate Document 7.

Did Carolyn have twin sisters?
Yes. Lauren and Lisa were twins and Carolyn’s older sisters. The Los Angeles Times reported that Lauren and Lisa were Ann and William’s first children and that Carolyn was 18 months younger. The paper’s contemporaneous account is the basis for that age comparison: Los Angeles Times: “Friends, Colleagues Reflect on Life of Lauren Bessette”.
Who was Lauren Bessette?
Lauren’s education and finance career are documented in the Los Angeles Times’ 1999 account. She graduated from Greenwich High School in 1982 and studied economics at Hobart and William Smith Colleges. She worked at financial firms, earned an MBA from the Wharton School, and worked in Hong Kong before returning to New York to join Morgan Stanley’s investment banking division. In December 1998, the newspaper reported that she had been promoted from vice president to principal.

The article also recounted a high-school friend’s description of Lauren as protective of Carolyn. Stacy Wreckerling told the paper that Lauren would not discuss rumors about Carolyn and John F. Kennedy Jr. This is a friend’s recollection reported by the newspaper, not a basis for drawing broad conclusions about the sisters’ private relationship.
Who was Lisa Bessette?
Lisa was Lauren’s twin. A Washington Post profile published in 1996 reported that Lisa had earned a master’s degree in history at the University of Michigan and was pursuing doctoral studies in Renaissance studies in Munich. That dated report establishes what she was doing then; it does not establish that she completed a doctorate or describe her later career. The Washington Post: “Myth America”.

What happened to Lauren?
Lauren, Carolyn and John F. Kennedy Jr. died in a plane crash in 1999. Lauren’s death is reported in the contemporaneous Los Angeles Times account of her life and career. Lisa was Lauren’s twin; the account of the crash identifies Lauren, Carolyn and Kennedy among those who died, not Lisa.
