Venice is known for masks and performances, Ivrea for its symbolic Battle of the Oranges, and Viareggio for monumental papier-mâché floats and satire. These three traditions show how different communities make the period their own; Putignano is another major celebration highlighted by Italy’s national tourism overview.
What happens at Carnevale in Italy?
Carnevale is celebrated in different ways across Italy, from north to south. In Venice, the focus is masks, costumes and public performances; Ivrea stages a ritualized orange battle rooted in local legend; and Viareggio turns float-making into a spectacle of contemporary caricature. The national tourism overview also names Putignano among the country’s notable celebrations, but these examples are not a complete inventory.
The word “Carnevale” covers a season and many local customs rather than a single national programme. For dates, access, safety guidance and events in a particular year, check the current information published by the relevant festival.
How the three festivals compare
| Destination | Signature tradition | What makes it distinctive |
|---|---|---|
| Venice | Elaborate masks and costumes, street performances and events such as the Flight of the Angel | Mask traditions, a historic urban setting and a performance programme |
| Ivrea | The Battle of the Oranges, with teams on foot and on carts | A participatory ritual associated with a local legend, and an unusually physical event |
| Viareggio | Large papier-mâché allegorical floats and satire | Float-making craft, contemporary caricature and cultural activities such as museum or workshop visits when offered |
Venice: masks, costumes and performance
Venice’s Carnevale is its most recognizable mask-centered spectacle. Italy’s tourism account describes masks as a historic means of concealing identity and easing social distinctions during the festivities of the Serenissima, before ordinary life resumed for Lent. Today’s celebrations retain elaborate masks and costumes alongside street performers, musicians, family events and private parties. The city’s Carnival tradition is mentioned in a document from 1094, according to the national tourism overview.

The Flight of the Angel is one of the events associated with the Venetian celebration. The tourism page recounts that it recalls a Turkish acrobat who crossed a rope to pay homage to the Doge in the second half of the sixteenth century; this is the page’s historical account. The same source notes that the Flight of the Angel, or Colombina, was entrusted with the official opening from 2001 to 2020, a dated programme detail rather than a guarantee about current editions. Ivrea: the Battle of the Oranges
In Ivrea, the defining event is the Battle of the Oranges, staged in the city’s main squares over three afternoons, from the Sunday before Shrove Tuesday through Shrove Tuesday. Teams on foot represent the people, while teams on carts represent the tyrant’s forces. The event is a symbolic reenactment, not simply a fruit-throwing spectacle: its meaning is tied to a local story of resistance.

The figure at the heart of that story is the Mugnaia, also called Violetta. In the legend, she kills the Marquis of Monferrato and sparks a popular uprising. The source describes the foot teams as unprotected and the cart teams as wearing protective leather helmets. A committee recognizes teams for ardour, technique and loyalty. Because the event involves a large, physical crowd spectacle, visitors should consult the current organizers’ safety and participation guidance before attending. Ivrea Carnival: dates and programme
Food is another part of the local festival experience. Italy’s tourism account names canestrelli, friciò, fagiolate, tofeja canavesana, faseuj grass and polenta with cod among Ivrea’s associated dishes.
Rank #3
Viareggio: papier-mâché and satire
Viareggio’s Carnival is built around large allegorical floats made of papier-mâché. The procession tradition dates to 1873, according to the official tourism feature, and its giant caricatures use satire to address contemporary topics and public figures. The floats make this a strong choice for visitors interested in craft and visual storytelling as much as the parade itself.
Burlamacco, a Carnival mask created in 1930 by Futurist painter Uberto Bonetti, is a local emblem. Viareggio’s tourism information also associates the season with cenci di Carnevale and chantilly-filled bomboloni. It describes local festivals, guided tours, workshops, a Carnival museum and a night parade; offerings can vary, so verify what is available for the intended year. Which Italian Carnival is right for you?
- Choose Venice if you are drawn to elaborate masks, historic urban scenery and public performance.
- Choose Ivrea if you want to understand how a local legend becomes a participatory public ritual—and are prepared for a physically intense event.
- Choose Viareggio if you are most interested in monumental floats, visual craft and satire on current affairs.
For a broader view, consider other celebrations such as Putignano, also named in Italy’s national tourism overview. Its inclusion signals the range of regional festivals, but the details of its customs and programme should be checked with current local information. Carnivals in Italy: from North to South
