Did Carl Carlton die?
Yes. ABC Audio and Stereogum reported on December 15, 2025, that Carlton had died. Both attributed the announcement to a tribute from his son, Carlton Hudgens II, on Facebook. ABC Audio quoted the son as writing, “RIP Dad, Legend Carl Carlton singer of She’s a Bad Mama Jama,” followed by, “Long hard fight in life and you will be missed.” The reports attribute those words to the post; they do not establish a precise death date through a primary family statement.
How old was Carl Carlton when he died?
Published reports disagree. ABC Audio and LOS40 described Carlton as 72, while Stereogum reported he was 73. Georgia Public Broadcasting lists his dates as May 21, 1952–December 14, 2025, which would make him 73; MusicBrainz also lists him as 73 and gives December 14, 2025 as his death date. Those listings do not resolve the discrepancy with a primary family record, so his age and exact date of death should be treated as unsettled in the available coverage.
What was Carl Carlton’s cause of death?
No cause of death was disclosed in the accessible reports. Some coverage noted that Carlton had a stroke in 2019, but that does not establish a connection between the stroke and his death.

“Everlasting Love”
Carlton became widely known for his 1974 recording of “Everlasting Love.” ABC Audio reported that the song peaked at No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100 that year.
“She’s a Bad Mama Jama (She’s Built, She’s Stacked)”
His later signature hit was the funk and R&B single “She’s a Bad Mama Jama (She’s Built, She’s Stacked),” released in August 1981. ABC Audio reported that it reached No. 22 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 2 on Billboard’s Soul Singles chart, and received a Grammy nomination for male R&B vocal performance. It was written and produced by Leon Haywood, according to the song’s reference entry; Carlton was the recording artist. The Grammy recognition was a nomination, not a win.

Who was Carl Carlton?
Born Carlton Hudgens, according to LOS40 and Stereogum, Carlton was an American R&B singer whose career began in the 1960s under the name “Little Carl Carlton.” His best-known recordings came in different eras: “Everlasting Love” brought him broad recognition in 1974, while “She’s a Bad Mama Jama” became a major funk and R&B hit in 1981.
