Cards Against Humanity and SpaceX settled the trespass lawsuit in September 2025, before a jury trial scheduled for November 3. The settlement terms were not disclosed. Cards Against Humanity said it received no money from SpaceX and that SpaceX had removed construction equipment from its land; the company said it would work with a local landscaping company to restore the property.

What the lawsuit alleged

Cards Against Humanity, the company behind the satirical party game, sued SpaceX over a parcel it owned in Cameron County, in far South Texas near SpaceX’s Starbase launch and testing site. In its 2024 petition, the company alleged that SpaceX or its contractors entered and occupied the land without permission and made physical changes to it. The complaint pleaded trespass and other claims and sought $15 million in damages. Those were allegations and a requested amount, not findings after a trial or money awarded by a court. Read the original petition.

How the case ended

The parties reached a settlement in September 2025, weeks before the November 3 trial date, according to the Associated Press. The case therefore ended without a jury decision. The settlement agreement and its specific terms were not made public in the reporting. Cards Against Humanity said it received no money from SpaceX. Associated Press coverage of the settlement.

What Cards Against Humanity said about the land

The company said SpaceX had removed its construction equipment and that it would work with a local landscaping company to restore the property. In a statement reproduced by The Texas Newsroom, the company described its goal as returning the land to its “natural state,” without “space garbage” or border walls. These are the company’s account and stated plans; the settlement terms do not establish a binding restoration obligation or an admission of liability. The Texas Newsroom’s report.

  • Contains 500 white cards and 100 black cards for maximum replayability.
  • Includes a booklet of sensible game rules and preposterous alternate rules.

Why Cards Against Humanity owned the parcel

The land purchase grew out of a 2017 campaign opposing construction of the U.S.-Mexico border wall. The Associated Press reported that 150,000 people contributed $15 each toward the purchase. Cards Against Humanity had told supporters they might receive proceeds if the company prevailed, making the absence of a reported payout a central point of interest. The company’s statement that it received no money answers whether it announced a payment; it does not reveal any other settlement terms.

What is—and is not—known about the outcome

  • Known: The lawsuit settled before its scheduled jury trial.
  • Known: Cards Against Humanity said it received no money and reported that SpaceX removed construction equipment.
  • Not disclosed: The settlement agreement’s exact terms and obligations.
  • Not established: A court finding that SpaceX was liable, an admission by SpaceX, or a binding restoration requirement.
  • Not a settlement payment: The $15 million figure was the amount requested in the 2024 complaint.

The company’s spokesperson said a trial would have cost more than the company was likely to win. That was Cards Against Humanity’s stated rationale for settling, not a disclosed term of the agreement.
