What “captivity” means in the play
A useful reading separates two connected forms of captivity:
- Physical and geographic captivity: the island’s separation from the mainland makes leaving a material problem. The WorldCat record places the play around 1900 on Robben Island and describes Plaatjies repeatedly trying to reach the mainland.
- Psychological or relational captivity: a character may be restricted by a relationship or circumstances even when the constraint is not simply a locked door or a boundary. The same catalog summary describes Stella’s jealous husband as her jailer, supporting this interpretation of her situation.
The island can therefore be discussed as both a real barrier and a symbol of isolation. Keep the distinction clear: the symbolic reading is an interpretation of the setting, while the specific details about the island and characters here come from a catalog summary rather than an independently checked reading of the complete play.
Plaatjies: captivity made visible through attempted escape
According to WorldCat’s summary, Plaatjies repeatedly tried to reach the mainland by building boats from shipwrecks, but did not escape; the summary says he died in the asylum in 1901. These details make his circumstances the clearest basis for discussing literal confinement and the desire for freedom.

In an essay, connect the failed attempts to the limits imposed by the setting: his efforts show a wish to leave, while their failure keeps him on the island. Avoid extending the summary into claims about particular scenes, motives, or dialogue unless you have verified those details in the play.
Stella: a relational reading of captivity
WorldCat’s catalog summary characterizes the island as a prison for Stella and her jealous husband as her jailer. This supports an argument that captivity in her case is not only geographic: her marriage is also presented as a constraint on her freedom. The island and the relationship can be considered together, but do not treat the catalog wording as a substitute for textual evidence. Use the play to identify the actions and language that support your interpretation.

How to handle Lamprecht and Barney
A study prompt asks students to discuss Plaatjies, Stella, Lamprecht, and Barney in relation to “personal captivity.” The prompt is posted on Scribd, and its status as an official examination question is unverified. The available source material does not establish scene-level details about Lamprecht or Barney, so it would be unsafe to assign either character a specific form of captivity on that basis alone.
To include them responsibly, consult the play and ask what restricts each character, whether the constraint is physical or psychological, and what evidence in the text supports that reading. Do not infer their circumstances simply because the prompt names them.

A defensible essay approach
- Define the idea: explain that captivity may involve physical confinement, geographic isolation, or restrictions within a relationship.
- Start with the strongest documented example: use Plaatjies’s reported escape attempts to discuss physical isolation, attributing those plot details to the WorldCat summary unless you have checked the play.
- Contrast Stella’s situation: discuss the catalog’s description of her jealous husband as a jailer, then support the interpretation with verified textual evidence.
- Address the other named characters from the text: consult the play for Lamprecht and Barney rather than inventing circumstances from the study prompt.
- Interpret the setting: explain how Robben Island can function both as a literal separation from the mainland and as a symbol of isolation.
- Conclude with a distinction, not a repetition: show how the characters’ situations differ, and make clear which points your textual evidence supports.
A Scribd study prompt suggests a 300–350-word essay, but that wording is user-posted and not verified as an official exam requirement. Follow the instructions for your own assignment if they differ.
