First, try opening Netflix on a phone or computer. If it fails there too, investigate the account or service; if it works elsewhere, concentrate on the Apple TV, its app, and its network. Work through the fixes below in order, from least disruptive to most disruptive.
Netflix on Apple TV is a separate service from an Apple TV subscription. You need a Netflix account and the Netflix app; signing in to an Apple Account does not authenticate Netflix. See Netflix’s Apple TV setup guide and Apple’s Apple TV subscription information.
Start with a two-minute diagnosis

Netflix recommends testing the account on another device and distinguishing an everywhere problem from a single-device problem in its general sign-in troubleshooting.
Check the account details first
- Confirm the email address shown on the Apple TV. It must be the Netflix account you intend to use.
- Re-enter the password carefully. Netflix passwords are case-sensitive; check capitalization, spelling, and accidental spaces.
- If you recently changed the password, replace the old password stored on Apple TV or in a password manager.
- For a sign-in code sent by email or text, request a new code, use it for the same email address displayed on the TV, and avoid reusing an expired code.
- Open Netflix in a browser and confirm that the account can sign in and has no membership, payment, or security prompt waiting for action.
If you use an iPhone or iPad as the Apple TV Remote and sign-in controls do not respond correctly, switch to the physical Apple TV remote. Netflix specifically notes this in its Error 119 guidance.

Sign in normally
- Open the Netflix app on Apple TV.
- Select Sign In.
- Enter the Netflix email address and password, or choose the code-based method shown by the app.
- Confirm that the expected Netflix profile appears.
Netflix currently lists Apple TV HD (4th generation) and Apple TV 4K (1st, 2nd, and 3rd generations) in its Apple TV support guide.
Fast, low-risk fixes
Restart Netflix
On Apple TV 4 or Apple TV 4K, double-click the TV/Home button, swipe left or right until Netflix is selected, then swipe upward to close it. Reopen Netflix. This is useful when the app freezes, shows a generic connection error, or loops back to sign-in. Netflix documents the procedure at its force-close instructions.
Restart Apple TV completely
From the interface, open Settings > System > Restart. On some versions the relevant settings are grouped differently. With the remote, press and hold the TV and Back buttons—or the TV and older remote’s Menu button—until the status light blinks rapidly. If the interface is unresponsive, disconnect Apple TV from power, wait at least five seconds, and reconnect it. Apple documents these methods in its restart guide. Netflix’s general instructions also call for a full power-down, not merely sleep, with about 15 seconds off.
Sign out and sign in again
- Open Netflix and go to its home screen.
- Press the remote’s Back button to open the side menu.
- Move left to the profile icon.
- Select Get Help, then Sign out, and confirm Yes.
- Sign in again.
Depending on the Netflix app version, the command may be called Get Help, Sign out, or Exit Netflix. Netflix describes these variations in its Apple TV guide.

Delete and reinstall Netflix
Use this when Netflix will not expose its help menu or continues failing after a restart.

- Highlight Netflix on the Apple TV Home Screen.
- Press and hold the center of the touch surface or clickpad ring until the icon moves.
- Press Play/Pause and choose Delete.
- Open the App Store, search for Netflix, and select Get or Install.
- Open Netflix and authenticate again.
Deleting the app signs you out and removes locally stored app data. Treat it as a data-clearing step rather than a harmless refresh. Netflix provides this recovery for Apple TV in its setup guide and for 401 failures at its 401 error page.
Update Netflix
Open the App Store, go to the purchased or app section if shown, find Netflix, and select Update when available. If there is no Update button, the installed version may already be current; reinstalling is the stronger option when its state is unclear. See Netflix’s 5072 guidance.
Update tvOS
- Open Settings.
- Select System or General, depending on the software interface.
- Select Software Updates.
- Choose Update Software, then Download and Install if offered.
Do not rely on a fixed “latest” tvOS number: Apple TV menus and releases change. Netflix documents both menu arrangements in its unavailable troubleshooting and Error 113 pages.
Test and repair the network
- Open Settings > General > Network.
- Select Wi-Fi or Ethernet and run Test Network.
- If you entered network values manually, set Configure IP to Automatic.
- Set Configure DNS to Automatic.
Automatic settings remove common address and DNS misconfigurations, but they are not a universal Netflix fix. A VPN, filtering DNS, parental-control system, or corporate network can also interfere; test temporarily on another network rather than assuming a particular service is blocked.
Restart the modem and router
- Turn off Apple TV.
- Unplug the modem and router for 30 seconds.
- Reconnect them and wait about one minute for service to return.
- Turn on Apple TV and retry Netflix.
This is a power cycle, not a factory reset. Do not press a router’s reset button unless you know your ISP and Wi-Fi configuration. Netflix gives the sequence at its network troubleshooting page.

If possible, compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet on an Ethernet-capable Apple TV 4K. A wired test can isolate wireless interference, but it cannot correct credentials, an unsupported software version, or an account problem. Apple lists Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi-plus-Ethernet configurations at its U.S. store.

When the Apple TV says it is already up to date
Netflix specifically identifies Apple TV software version 6.2.1 or earlier as an exception: the device may report that it is current even though Netflix requires an update. In that case, contact Apple rather than repeatedly reinstalling the app. Identify the exact Apple TV model first; do not assume every older box is unsupported.

Reset only after credentials work elsewhere, Netflix has been reinstalled, tvOS and the app are updated, network settings have been tested, and the modem/router has been restarted. A reset erases Apple TV settings and stored information, including the Netflix login and Wi-Fi credentials. Have both passwords ready before proceeding. Use Apple’s model-specific Apple TV support instructions because the recovery path depends on whether the device remains responsive.

Contact Apple
- tvOS cannot update or recovery will not complete.
- A warning symbol or flashing status light appears.
- The remote or Apple TV hardware seems defective.
- The model is too old to receive required software.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does Netflix work on my phone but not Apple TV?
That pattern points away from a general account outage and toward the Apple TV app, tvOS, stored session data, or the Apple TV’s network settings. Restart, sign out, reinstall, update, and test the network in that order.
Can I sign in with my Apple Account?
No. Apple Account authentication and Netflix authentication are separate. Enter the email address and password for the Netflix account.
Does deleting Netflix cancel my membership?
No. Deleting the app removes local app data and signs the Apple TV out; it does not delete the Netflix account.
Is 15 Mbps required just to sign in?
No. Netflix’s 15 Mbps figure is its steady-connection recommendation for 4K streaming, not an authentication requirement.
Do I need a new Apple TV?
Only consider replacement if the exact device cannot receive required software, has a hardware fault, or remains unreliable after the account, app, software, and network checks.
