Candice Michelle entered WWE through the 2004 Diva Search, which she did not win—and WWE later reported that she did not make its top 20. Three years later, she defeated Melina at Vengeance: Night of Champions to become the first Diva Search contestant to win the Women’s Championship. The change in her standing was not simply a makeover of her image: contemporary WWE coverage tied it to training and learning, while Michelle said she wanted fans to see her commitment to wrestling.

How did Candice Michelle enter WWE?

Michelle came to WWE through the 2004 Diva Search, a competition she did not win. WWE’s July 2007 retrospective said she did not reach the top 20. That makes her later championship an underdog story in a specific sense: she began outside the competition’s leading finishers, then went on to achieve a distinction none of its contestants had yet reached.

WWE’s profile described her early image as “eye candy” and later characterized her as someone who could “mix it up in the ring.” Those are WWE’s descriptions of her public standing, not an independent assessment of her wrestling ability.

When did Candice Michelle win the WWE Women’s Championship?

At Vengeance: Night of Champions in 2007, Michelle defeated Melina for the Women’s Championship. WWE identified her as the first Diva Search contestant to win the title, and its later profile called the victory the high point of her WWE career. The milestone answered the doubt she had spoken about directly: in an interview published by WWE on June 25, 2007, Michelle said, “I finally proved to all the people who doubted me, the people who said I’d never make it, that I’m more than just an actress; I’m more than just pretty eye candy.”

How did Candice Michelle work to change the conversation?

In a July 2007 WWE feature, Michelle spoke about training, learning, and becoming more focused. She wanted fans to understand that she was there to wrestle, not simply to pursue a screen career. As she put it, “At minimum, they can see that I’m dedicated, that I’m training and that I’m learning; that I am here because I want to be here, not because I want to be a movie star.”

She also described a gradual shift in how she felt fans regarded her: “Slowly but surely I think I’m gaining the respect of our fans.” The wording matters: this was Michelle’s own view of a process underway, not a claim that every fan had changed their opinion. WWE’s contemporary coverage also reported that she successfully defended the championship against Melina at The Great American Bash.

How did injuries interrupt her championship run?

A broken clavicle ended Michelle’s first title reign and led to a lengthy absence, according to WWE’s account of her career and injuries. After preparing for another run, she broke her collarbone again. Michelle described the setback as emotionally difficult. The available WWE account establishes those injuries and their career impact; it does not establish further medical details or a cause.

What her WWE story does—and does not—show

Michelle’s documented path is a change in professional standing: a Diva Search contestant who did not win or reach the top 20 became the first contestant from that competition to win the Women’s Championship. WWE’s accounts connect that outcome to her training and persistence, and her own remarks make clear that she wanted to be seen as more than a pretty face.
