Can YouTube Live Play 10-Bit or HDR Video Files Continuously?

YouTube Live supports HDR through a compatible live encoder—not by playing an uploaded file directly. Here are the HEVC 10-bit, color, protocol, and looping requirements.

Yes—but YouTube Live does not play a file you upload as a live broadcast. To stream prerecorded HDR continuously, a live encoder must play the file, preserve its HDR signal, and send a compatible live feed to YouTube. For HDR live ingestion, YouTube specifies 10-bit H.265/HEVC with matching HDR color characteristics. The file-looping controls depend on your encoder.

What “10-bit” and “HDR” mean for a live stream

10-bit describes the signal’s color depth; it does not, by itself, make a video HDR. The live signal also needs compatible HDR metadata. YouTube specifies BT.2020 color primaries and either ST 2084 PQ or HLG transfer characteristics, matching the source. Its current HDR streaming guidance says: “At this time, HDR streaming to YouTube is only supported with the H.265 (HEVC) video codec.”

That is an ingest requirement for the stream sent to YouTube, not a promise that every 10-bit file will stream as HDR. Start with a source that is genuinely HDR, identify whether it uses PQ or HLG, and make sure the encoder preserves the matching characteristics while producing HEVC 10-bit output.

How to stream a prerecorded HDR file continuously

The workflow is: play the file in an encoder, configure that encoder for YouTube’s HDR live-ingest requirements, and enable looping in the playback software if you want it to repeat. YouTube documents the stream requirements, but not a universal recipe for looping a file; controls vary by encoder and device.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  1. Check the source. Confirm that the video is HDR and determine whether its transfer characteristic is PQ or HLG. Do not assume a 10-bit label alone is enough.
  2. Choose an encoder that can play and loop the file. Verify that it can use the file as a source, repeat it continuously, and retain its HDR metadata. YouTube’s general guidance does not establish file-loop controls for a particular product.
  3. Configure HDR encoding. YouTube’s OBS HDR instructions specify a hardware HEVC encoder, Main 10 profile, P010 (4:2:0) color format, and Rec. 2100 PQ or HLG. The exact options depend on your device and software. YouTube recommends HLG in those OBS instructions, but the transfer setting must match the source.
  4. Pick a supported ingest protocol. YouTube documents RTMP(S) and HLS for HDR. Its live encoder guidance recommends H.265 for HDR over RTMP(S); HLS is an option when the encoder does not support the relevant capabilities over RTMP.
  5. Set general live parameters. YouTube recommends CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval, and says not to exceed 4 seconds. Select the bitrate for your actual output resolution and frame rate from YouTube’s encoder settings rather than assuming one bitrate fits all.
  6. Connect the encoder to YouTube. Use the appropriate YouTube live-stream setup and stream key for the selected protocol. If using HLS, follow YouTube’s HLS-specific requirements below.
  7. Check the result on a compatible playback device. The Live Control Room preview does not display HDR colors, so it cannot by itself confirm how HDR looks to viewers.

RTMP(S) or HLS: which should you use?

Consideration RTMP(S) HLS
HDR support YouTube documents HDR over RTMP(S); its general live guidance recommends H.265 for HDR over RTMP(S). YouTube documents HLS for HDR and identifies it as an alternative when an encoder lacks the relevant RTMP capabilities.
Latency YouTube describes RTMP as a continuous stream. Higher latency: YouTube says HLS sends video in segments rather than a continuous stream.
HLS-specific requirements Not applicable. For HDR, YouTube specifies 1–4 second TS segments, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT, and no encryption besides HTTPS. Use the appropriate HLS stream key and leave manual resolution disabled for HDR.

For HLS setup details, see YouTube’s HLS streaming guidance. It states: “HLS has higher latency because it sends segments of video, instead of a continuous stream like RTMP.”

What viewers will see

HDR appears automatically on supported devices. YouTube lists HDR TVs using the YouTube app, Chromecast Ultra connected to an HDR TV, Android devices with HDR displays, and computers with HDR graphics and displays when HDR is enabled on Windows or Mac. Other devices receive SDR. On a compatible playback device, viewers can look for an HDR indicator in the video quality menu; the Live Control Room preview does not show HDR colors.

Do not confuse an HDR upload with HDR live ingestion

YouTube documents HDR video uploads separately. Its HDR upload guidance lists MOV, MP4, and MKV as tested containers and recommends upload codecs such as VP9 Profile 2, AV1, and HEVC, with correct transfer-function, color-primary, and matrix metadata. Those upload recommendations are not a list of HDR live-ingest codecs. For HDR live streaming, follow the live-specific HEVC, 10-bit, color-characteristic, protocol, and encoder requirements.

Troubleshooting HDR live playback

  • The stream is 10-bit but does not appear as HDR. Confirm the source is HDR and that the encoder sends matching BT.2020 primaries and PQ or HLG transfer characteristics, along with HEVC Main 10 output.
  • The encoder does not offer the required HDR options over RTMP(S). Check its HDR/HEVC capabilities. YouTube documents HLS as an alternative when the relevant RTMP capabilities are unavailable; account for HLS’s higher latency and follow its HDR settings.
  • The file plays once and stops. Looping is controlled by the playback/encoder product, not by a universal YouTube setting. Enable repeat or loop in that product and verify it continues feeding the live encoder at the end of the file.
  • The Control Room preview looks washed out or not HDR. The preview does not display HDR colors. Check playback on an HDR-capable device and look for the HDR indicator in the quality menu.
  • Viewers do not see HDR. HDR is available only on supported devices; other devices receive SDR. Confirm the viewer’s device and display support HDR and that HDR is enabled where required on the computer.
  • HLS does not connect or behaves unexpectedly. Check the appropriate HLS stream key, HTTPS POST/PUT, TS segment duration of 1–4 seconds, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, no encryption besides HTTPS, and disabled manual resolution for HDR.
  • The stream is unstable or constrained by bandwidth. Use YouTube’s bitrate recommendation for the chosen output resolution and frame rate, CBR, and a 2-second keyframe interval (no more than 4 seconds). YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple output formats for viewers.

Copyright and continuous programming

A technically valid HDR feed does not grant rights to the video, music, or other material in it. Before running a continuous stream, make sure you have the rights needed to broadcast every part of the file or playlist and follow YouTube’s applicable live-stream rules. HDR compatibility and copyright permission are separate questions.
