Interstellar has had limited 70mm theatrical engagements, but the confirmed runs in the available records are historical—not a current 2026 ticket announcement. The film’s 10th-anniversary return began December 6, 2024. If you are hoping to see it on a large screen now, check local theater listings and confirm the specific presentation format before buying or traveling.
Is Interstellar playing in 70mm near me?
The official announcements and contemporaneous reporting establish two past events: the film’s original 2014 film-format engagements and a 2024 anniversary rerelease. They do not establish a current 2026 engagement, venue list, showtimes, or ticket prices. Availability can vary by location and date, so consult a theater’s own live listings for a confirmed screening.
In 2014, Paramount Pictures and Warner Bros. Pictures announced select advance engagements for November 5 in the United States and Canada. The nationwide opening followed on November 7, with digital presentations also available. The studios described the film as using a combination of 35mm anamorphic film and 65mm IMAX film. Paramount Pictures’ October 1, 2014 announcement has the original format and release details.
For the 10th anniversary, Peacock announced a theatrical return beginning December 6, 2024, in IMAX 70mm and digital. The Associated Press later reported that the rerelease played on 166 screens in the United States and Canada; the 70mm IMAX presentations sold out in minutes, and exhibitors added screenings during that week. Those figures describe that past engagement, not present-day availability. See Peacock’s anniversary announcement and the Associated Press report and interview.

Is 70mm the same as IMAX 70mm?
No. “70mm” alone does not tell you whether a screening is standard 70mm or 70mm IMAX. The 2014 studio announcement identified three film formats for select engagements: 15-perforation/70mm IMAX, standard 70mm, and 35mm. The 2024 anniversary return was announced in IMAX 70mm and digital. A theater listing should specify the format; if it only says “70mm,” ask the venue whether it means standard 70mm or IMAX 70mm.
| Listing format | What the announcements establish | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Standard 70mm film | Announced for select 2014 engagements. | Whether a specific theater has a current screening and whether the listing means standard 70mm. |
| 70mm IMAX film | Announced for select 2014 engagements and the 2024 anniversary rerelease. | That the venue explicitly lists IMAX 70mm, plus its dates and ticket availability. |
| Digital | Available for the 2014 nationwide opening; also announced for the 2024 anniversary return. | Whether the local screening is digital and when it plays. |
| 35mm film | Announced for select 2014 engagements. | Whether a current local screening is specifically listed in 35mm. |
How to check a local screening
- Open the theater’s official showtime or ticket page for your location.
- Search for Interstellar and check that the dates and showtimes are current.
- Read the format label carefully: standard 70mm, 70mm IMAX, and digital are not interchangeable.
- Confirm ticket availability with the exhibitor before making plans; older announcements do not confirm live inventory.
What if there is no local 70mm screening?
A separate home-viewing option is the Interstellar 4K UHD set. The Associated Press reported in December 2024 that Christopher Nolan had approved the set and that it was available at that time. A home-video edition is a way to watch the film at home, not a substitute for its large-screen film presentation.
