Yes. Always Lalisa is announced for both IMAX and standard participating cinemas, so IMAX is not required. Sony Music Vision also announced a later global streaming release exclusively on YouTube Premium in 2026, but has not given an exact streaming date. Theater participation and showtimes vary by location.
What are the ways to watch Always Lalisa?
The announced options are a limited theatrical engagement in IMAX and other cinemas, followed by global streaming on YouTube Premium later in 2026. Sony Music Vision’s September 2, 2026 announcement describes the theatrical release as opening worldwide through Trafalgar Releasing beginning October 12, then streaming globally and exclusively on YouTube Premium later that year. The announcement does not establish that every theater or territory will screen it on October 12.
| Viewing option | What is announced | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| IMAX cinema | Limited theatrical engagement beginning October 12, 2026; the official IMAX listing gives a duration of 1 hour 40 minutes. | Whether a nearby IMAX location has a current listing and available showtimes. |
| Standard cinema | Included in Sony Music Vision’s announcement of a release in “IMAX and cinemas.” | Whether local cinemas are participating and on which dates. |
| YouTube Premium | Global, exclusive streaming is planned for later in 2026, after the theatrical release. | The streaming date and availability in your territory; neither is specified in the announcement. |
The two cinema formats are separate ways to see the theatrical release; the announcement does not say that an IMAX ticket or screen is necessary. The streaming plan is a later at-home option, not a confirmed same-day alternative. In practical terms, the choice is not simply between IMAX and staying home: a standard cinema may be an option if one near you is participating, while YouTube Premium is the announced route for viewers who prefer to wait.
There is no published universal schedule or price in the cited announcement. It identifies the release window and the planned streaming destination, but local listings determine whether a theater is showing the film, on what date, and whether tickets are available. Treat the announcement as a release plan rather than a guarantee of a particular screening.

How to find a non-IMAX screening
- Visit the official film website, AlwaysLaLisa.com, and look for its showtimes or cinema listings. Sony’s announcement directs viewers there for listings and says tickets would go on sale September 9, 2026. That ticket-sale announcement is not proof that tickets remain available now.
- Search the listings for ordinary cinema locations as well as IMAX venues. A general cinema listing may not be labeled consistently across ticketing systems, so check the venue and screen format shown for the specific session.
- Open the local cinema’s own listing before making plans. Confirm the date, time, venue, format, and ticket availability; schedules can differ even between cinemas in the same city.
- If no suitable screening appears, check again with the official film site and local theaters. A missing listing does not establish that the film will never play nearby, but the announced engagement is limited, so do not assume a later local date will be added.
Sony’s announcement provides a global release plan, not a complete, live inventory for every country. The official IMAX film page separately lists October 12, 2026, as the release date and the running time as 1 hour 40 minutes: IMAX’s Always Lalisa listing. It is useful for the IMAX listing and duration, but it should not be treated as a directory of all standard-cinema screenings.
When you check a listing, distinguish the film’s format from the cinema brand. A showing at a cinema that has an IMAX auditorium is not necessarily an IMAX session; the individual showtime should identify the screen or format. Conversely, a regular auditorium at a participating multiplex could be the non-IMAX option. Verify the details for the exact session rather than relying on a venue’s general description.
The September 9 ticket-sale date was announced ahead of the engagement. It tells readers when sales were scheduled to begin, not whether a particular show is sold out, whether tickets are still being sold, or whether every market opened sales at the same time. For an immediate plan, the local theater’s ticket page is the practical check. If the official site does not show a listing for your area, that is a reason to verify locally, not evidence of a confirmed screening.
What the Japan schedule shows—and what it does not
Sony Music Japan’s theater page, current as of September 18, 2026, gives a concrete example of how a limited run can vary by venue. It lists screenings on October 12, 14, and 17 for many locations. Human Trust Cinema Yurakucho in Tokyo is shown with a longer run, from October 12 through December 18. These are Japan-specific listings, not a worldwide schedule, and they should not be used to infer dates for another country.

Check the theater’s current listing for the exact local schedule. The Japan details are on Sony Music Japan’s LISA release and theater page.

- There is a surchase for 3D, premium large screen format (e.g., IMAX, AMC Prime), alternative content, dine-in-theatres, film festival, special theatrical presentations and premium services; location surcharges may also apply at select locations, including Disney and Universal properties operated by AMC
The difference between the many Japan listings centered on three dates and the longer Tokyo listing is useful context, but not a forecast for other cities. A limited engagement can have different dates and lengths at different venues. The Japan page is also a dated snapshot, marked current as of September 18; viewers should not treat that historical schedule as a live source for today’s availability, even within Japan.
For the same reason, “worldwide” in the announcement describes the intended reach of the theatrical release, not a promise that each country has the same opening day, number of screenings, or duration. If you are traveling or comparing cities, check the theater where you actually plan to attend. A schedule in one market cannot confirm that another market is participating.
When will it stream at home?
Sony Music Vision says Always Lalisa will stream globally and exclusively on YouTube Premium later in 2026, after its theatrical release. The official announcement does not provide a day or month for the streaming launch. As a result, viewers can plan around a later 2026 release, but cannot use the announcement to determine when the film will appear on the service.
The announcement names YouTube Premium as the exclusive streaming destination. It does not describe a free, ad-supported YouTube version, a rental or purchase option, or a disc release. Those formats should not be assumed from the stated streaming plan. For any later date or availability update, consult the official announcement and film site: Sony Music Vision’s release announcement.
That means streaming is a confirmed part of the announced plan, but the exact wait is unknown. If you are deciding whether to go to a theater or wait, you can compare the certainty of a listed local session with an unconfirmed streaming date. A theater listing gives a specific time and place if one is available; the streaming announcement gives only the later-2026 window and platform. It does not say that the film will arrive on the same day as the cinema opening.

The word “exclusively” matters: Sony’s announcement identifies YouTube Premium as the streaming home, rather than announcing several competing services. However, the source reviewed does not spell out subscription pricing, regional catalog terms, or whether any other viewing arrangement could be announced later. Do not infer a free viewing option or a rental price from the announcement. Check official updates for the date and any service details when they are published.
YouTube Global Head of Music Lyor Cohen described the platform as a place to share LISA’s story, saying it would give fans “a front-row seat to her evolution as an artist.” That statement explains the partnership, but it does not add a release date or establish a separate free streaming edition.
What is the film about?
Always Lalisa is a documentary directed by Sue Kim. Sony describes it as following a pivotal year in LISA’s life as she steps away from BLACKPINK and develops her solo career and acting work. That subject is the same whether you watch in IMAX, another participating cinema, or the later streaming release; the announced format options change where and when viewers can see it.
This is a documentary release, not a music album listing or a separate concert-format announcement in the sources reviewed. The Sony Music Japan page also includes information about LISA’s PRESS PLAY CD, but it does not identify that CD as a soundtrack or as a way to watch the film. Do not treat an associated music release as a substitute for a cinema ticket or the announced streaming version.
Which option makes sense for you?
- Choose a standard cinema if you want to see the film during its theatrical engagement but do not have, or do not want to use, an IMAX venue. Confirm that a non-IMAX screening is actually listed near you.
- Choose IMAX if you prefer that format and can find a session that fits your location and schedule. The film is announced for IMAX, but the listing is not a promise of local availability.
- Wait for streaming if home viewing is more convenient. The announced destination is YouTube Premium, with a release planned later in 2026; no exact date has been stated.
The practical decision comes down to three checks: the format you want, the dates available locally, and whether you prefer a theater visit or can wait for the later streaming window. For current theater information, rely on the official film site and the local cinema rather than assuming that a worldwide announcement means a screening is available in every area.

If an IMAX session is unavailable or inconvenient, look for a standard cinema session before concluding that the only theatrical choice is IMAX. If neither format is listed near you, waiting for the announced streaming release is an option, but its timing is not yet specific enough to plan around a particular day. There is no supported reason to buy a physical edition or a related CD as an alternative viewing route; the confirmed routes in Sony’s announcement are cinemas and later YouTube Premium streaming.
