Facebook Messenger’s hidden chess game was real, and its launch command was @fbchess play. But Meta’s current Messenger command documentation does not list it, so there is no official confirmation that it still works. You can try the old command once; if Messenger treats it as ordinary text, use a chess service such as Chess.com or Lichess instead.
Try the old Messenger chess command
- Open a one-to-one conversation with the friend you want to play.
- Send
@fbchess play. - If Messenger recognizes it, look for a game or board response. The historical help command was
@fbchess help. - If a game starts, enter a legal move as a command, for example
@fbchess e4.
This is the historically reported method, not a workflow Meta currently confirms. Contemporary coverage described the game in 2016; Meta’s current Messenger commands page lists other commands but not @fbchess. That omission does not prove the game was formally discontinued, but it means you should not count on it being available.
How moves worked
FB Chess was a text-command game, not a tap-to-move board. Players typed a move into the chat, prefixed by @fbchess; Messenger then displayed or updated the board. Historical examples include @fbchess e4 for a pawn move, @fbchess Nf3 for a knight move, and @fbchess Bc4 for a bishop move. Castling was reported as @fbchess O-O.

These are algebraic-style chess moves: the letter identifies the piece and the square identifies its destination. Knight uses N to distinguish it from king. Historical guides generally used uppercase piece letters. If a move is illegal or ambiguous, the parser may reject it; the game also has to be active and waiting for your turn. These details describe the old command interface and may not apply if the bot no longer responds.

Other commands reported in historical guides
Third-party guides reported commands for viewing the board, undoing a move, resigning, and handling draws. These are not listed as current Messenger commands by Meta, so regard them as historical rather than guaranteed features.

If Messenger does not recognize the command
If the message appears as ordinary text, opens a mention interface, or gets no chess response, the command may no longer be active or may not be available to your account, app, or platform. Do not keep sending it. Try these basic checks once:

- Make sure you are in a normal Messenger conversation, preferably one-to-one, rather than a comment, Story reply, Page conversation, or group.
- Update Messenger, close and reopen the app, then try once more.
- If convenient, try Messenger in a desktop browser at messenger.com.
- If it still behaves like ordinary text, switch to a dedicated chess platform rather than repeatedly reinstalling or changing settings without evidence.
Meta’s general Messenger troubleshooting guidance includes updating the app, checking connectivity and storage, and restarting it. Those steps can address app problems, but they cannot restore a feature that is no longer offered.
Is Play Together a chess replacement?
Meta currently documents Play Together, which lets people play virtual games during a Messenger video call. The documented flow is to start a video call, select Play together, choose a game, and select Start game. Meta says at least two people must be in the call; the feature is supported on certain iPhone, Android, and messenger.com experiences and may not be available in every area or on every device.

Meta’s page does not confirm chess in the game catalog, and Play Together is separate from the old text-based @fbchess bot. Treat it as an option for whatever games are currently shown to you, not as a confirmed way to play chess.
Choose a dependable way to play with a friend
If your goal is simply to finish a chess game, a dedicated service is more practical than relying on a legacy Messenger command. Chess.com and Lichess both offer online chess experiences and friend play; their features, interfaces, and account requirements may differ, so check the service directly for current details.

The historical Messenger game was a lightweight novelty for people comfortable typing notation. It was not documented as a modern chess platform with a conventional touch board, ratings, clocks, analysis, or matchmaking. For those features—or for a beginner who wants to move pieces visually—a dedicated service is the clearer choice.
