Yes, a Twitch streamer can receive viewer payments during a sleep stream—but the widely cited $5,600 example was one creator’s reported result in 2020, not a typical rate or Twitch ad payout. WIRED attributed the money to viewers paying to submit videos for playback while Matthew “Mizkif” Rinaudo slept.
What happened in the $5,600 sleep stream
In a March 2020 report, WIRED said Mizkif received $5,600 during a sleep stream. Viewers paid to submit clips that played on the broadcast. That is a reported total from one event—not evidence that Twitch paid him $5,600 in advertising revenue, and not a measure of what sleep streams generally earn.
WIRED also reported a different approach by Amouranth: she encouraged donations and subscriptions, with every 20 subscriptions extending her alarm by an hour. These are separate creator examples, not a standardized sleep-stream earning model. Mizkif joked to viewers, “She thinks I do nothing now,” before adding, “Wait until she finds out I literally slept and made money.”
Where sleep-stream money can come from
Viewer payments and paid submissions
In the Mizkif account, the specific mechanism was viewers paying to submit videos for playback. Other creators may prompt donations or subscriptions, as WIRED described in Amouranth’s case. Neither example establishes a guaranteed amount or a dependable income tactic.

Twitch monetization tools
Twitch’s Creator Camp describes Bits, subscriptions, and ads among its general monetization options; it also discusses sponsorships and Amazon Associates product links. These are possible routes for creators across Twitch content, but the cited sleep-stream report does not show that all—or any particular one—produced the $5,600 total.
Twitch’s Monetized Streamer Agreement covers program fees related to Bits and paid or gifted subscriptions. It says Partners and Affiliates can receive Program Fees under the agreement’s terms. Subscription revenue percentages are shown in a creator’s dashboard, and offers may vary, so there is no universal split to apply to every streamer.

Tool access is not the same as getting a payout
In a May 13, 2026 announcement, Twitch said eligible streamers would gain broader access to tools including subscriptions, Bits, emotes, badges, and Channel Points. The rollout was to begin in the United States, with global expansion planned later in the year; that announcement should not be read as proof of identical availability everywhere. Twitch also distinguished access to tools from payout eligibility: receiving a payout still requires Partner or Affiliate status.
The same announcement mentioned a $50 minimum payout threshold for US Spendable Balance. That figure is specific to the context Twitch described; it should not be assumed to apply to every region or payout arrangement. Check Twitch’s current terms and your account dashboard for the rules that apply to you.

What the $5,600 figure does—and does not—tell you
- It does show: WIRED reported that one creator received $5,600 during one 2020 sleep stream involving paid viewer video submissions.
- It does not show: that Twitch paid the amount as ad revenue, that the figure was net income, or that another streamer can expect to earn a similar amount.
- It cannot establish: average sleep-stream earnings or a reliable comparison with ordinary streams, ads, subscriptions, or Bits. The cited sources provide no representative earnings statistic.
There is no special product established as necessary for the reported revenue event. WIRED noted that Mizkif gave a Nintendo Switch to a viewer afterward; that was a reported giveaway, not a requirement or recommendation for starting a sleep stream.
