That report described a planned feature—not proof it launched. Dave & Buster’s current app terms reviewed for this article do not mention wagering, so whether the feature is available now, and where, remains unconfirmed.
What the reported feature was supposed to do
The Atlantic’s July 8, 2024 report described Dave & Buster’s partnering with Lucra to facilitate real-money contests through the company’s app. The examples named were Skee-Ball and basketball shoot-outs: arcade games based on player skill, rather than sports wagers placed on a professional game.
The account described a planned app feature, not a new betting console or a change to every arcade machine. It said the feature was expected in the coming months, but that forecast is not evidence that a launch took place.
Is real-money betting available at Dave & Buster’s now?
Current availability is not confirmed by the official pages reviewed. Dave & Buster’s Mobile App terms describe buying game chips, creating a Rewards account, tracking tickets and unused chips, and checking Rewards status; the listed app functions do not mention wagering. That omission leaves the question unresolved—it does not prove that no separate feature ever launched.

The ordinary arcade experience is card- and app-based: Dave & Buster’s says a Power Card can be loaded into its Mobile App and that a digital card may activate a game by tapping a reader. The company also says it has eliminated loose coins and physical tokens. Those details concern game play, not wagers; the sources do not establish that Power Card value can be used to place bets.
What the report and current information establish
| Question | What is established |
|---|---|
| When was the proposal reported? | The Atlantic published its report on July 8, 2024. |
| Who was named as the partner? | Lucra, described in the report as a gamification technology firm. |
| Which games were given as examples? | Skee-Ball and basketball shoot-outs. |
| Where was the feature supposed to run? | Through the Dave & Buster’s app, according to the report. |
| Did it launch, and where? | Not established by the report or the current official app-terms page reviewed. |
| How would contests work? | Not stated in the sources: they do not establish how players are matched, how outcomes are scored, or whether contests are player-versus-player. |
| What are the payment and withdrawal rules? | Not stated in the sources. |
| What age or locations qualify? | Not stated for wagering. The cited Rewards rules and store footprint do not define wagering eligibility or coverage. |
Rewards eligibility is not betting eligibility
Dave & Buster’s Rewards rules say full membership is open to eligible U.S. residents age 13 and older. Those rules govern Rewards membership; they do not establish an age limit or eligibility requirement for a real-money contest. Likewise, the company’s reported footprint—179 branded stores in 43 states, Puerto Rico, and Canada as of February 3, 2026—does not show that wagering is offered in any of those locations.

How to check before relying on a claim of availability
- Check the current Dave & Buster’s app terms and feature descriptions for an explicit wagering or contest function; the terms reviewed here do not list one.
- Look for official contest rules that identify eligible locations and ages, game mechanics, entry and payment terms, payouts or withdrawals, and the operator responsible for the feature.
- Do not treat the 2024 report’s projected rollout date, ordinary Rewards eligibility, or a store’s presence in a state as confirmation that real-money contests are available there.
Until current official terms or contest rules confirm the feature, the careful answer is that Dave & Buster’s was reported to be planning app-based real-money skill contests in 2024, but present availability and geographic reach remain unverified.
