If YouTube terminated your channel because of copyright infringement claims and you believe a removal was mistaken, you can submit a copyright counter notification even after termination. That is different from appealing a Community Guidelines termination. A counter notification is a legal process, so use it only if you have a genuine basis to challenge the removal.
First, identify what happened to the livestream
“A copyright strike from a livestream” can describe different events, and the remedy depends on which one occurred.
- Active livestream interrupted or removed: YouTube scans live streams for third-party content, including another live broadcast. If it identifies a match, it may show a placeholder and warn you; if the material remains, it may interrupt or terminate the stream. A copyright removal can also result in a strike. YouTube says live-streaming access is restricted for seven days when an active livestream is removed for copyright. See YouTube’s copyright-strike guidance and live-streaming restrictions guidance.
- Archived livestream with a Content ID claim: YouTube says Content ID claims are made after an archived livestream ends. A Content ID claim is not automatically a copyright strike; a later copyright removal request may lead to removal and a strike. See YouTube’s Content ID guidance.
- Channel termination: Check the termination notice and information available after signing in. YouTube says terminated creators lose access to Studio and other features but can still sign in to review termination information. The notice should help you determine whether the termination is for copyright claims or Community Guidelines violations. See YouTube’s channel termination guidance.
How to challenge a copyright removal after termination
- Confirm the basis for termination. Review YouTube’s termination email and the information available when you sign in. If the termination resulted from copyright claims you believe are incorrect, the relevant route is generally a counter notification—not the Community Guidelines appeal form.
- Prepare a counter notification only if you can explain why the removal was mistaken. YouTube’s counter notification instructions ask you to explain clearly why the removal was an error or misidentification. A basis might involve mistaken identification or a potentially applicable exception such as fair use, fair dealing, or public domain; the facts and applicable law matter.
- Submit through a route available to terminated creators. YouTube says a terminated creator may submit through YouTube Studio or by email, fax, or postal mail. Follow the current instructions for the route and type of content involved; do not assume every Studio feature remains accessible after termination.
- Provide the required information accurately. YouTube’s instructions request the submitter’s legal name and contact information, a direct link to the removed content, and other required details. A representative, such as an attorney, may submit on your behalf. YouTube shares the counter notification with the claimant.
- Keep records and watch for the next notice. Save the termination message, removal details, links, and copies of what you submit. Do not include false information or fabricate documentation.
What happens after YouTube forwards a valid counter notification
YouTube says a valid counter notification that it forwards gives the claimant 10 US business days to provide evidence of legal action to keep the content from being reinstated. If the claimant does not provide such evidence within that period, YouTube says it will reinstate the content unless you deleted it. YouTube describes this process; it does not guarantee that a counter notification will be accepted, that the claimant will not take legal action, or that a particular channel will be restored. See YouTube’s counter notification guidance.
Do not confuse the copyright process with other routes
| Situation | What it is | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Copyright removal request and strike | A copyright takedown that removes content and results in a strike. | A counter notification may challenge a removal you believe was mistaken. It is a legal process, and YouTube shares it with the claimant. |
| Community Guidelines termination | A termination for a platform policy violation rather than a copyright removal. | YouTube describes a separate Studio appeal route, with a form available if Studio submission is unavailable. Its stated window is up to one year, with limits on the number of appeals. That deadline is not the copyright counter-notification deadline. See YouTube’s termination guidance and Community Guidelines appeal information. |
| Content ID claim | A claim against content, including an archived livestream; it is not necessarily a strike. | A Content ID claim appeal challenges the claim. If that process leads to a valid copyright removal request and video removal, you may then submit a counter notification if you believe the removal was mistaken. See YouTube’s Content ID guidance. |
Do not apply the Community Guidelines appeal limit or one-year window to a copyright counter notification. Use the copyright-specific instructions for that process.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Other ways a copyright strike may be resolved
- Ask the claimant to retract the removal request. YouTube lists retraction as an option for resolving a strike. See YouTube’s copyright-strike guidance.
- Complete Copyright School and wait. YouTube says a strike may expire after 90 days if Copyright School is completed. Expiration does not itself reinstate the removed video.
These alternatives do not make a counter notification appropriate if you have no good-faith basis to dispute the removal. YouTube warns that misuse—including false information or fraudulent documentation—can lead to account termination or other legal consequences. Because the process involves information shared with the claimant and potential legal consequences, consider consulting a qualified attorney if you are unsure about your position. YouTube permits an authorized representative, such as an attorney, to submit for you.
Preventing future livestream copyright problems
Before scheduling or starting a stream, confirm that you have the rights needed for every included recording, song, clip, and broadcast. A livestream interruption, a copyright strike, and a Content ID claim on an archived stream are different events; identify which notice YouTube actually sent before deciding what to do.
