Technically, yes—but it is not a dependable way to run an unattended 24/7 channel. PRISM Live Studio can keep broadcasting on an Android phone while the app is in the background, but that permission does not guarantee the phone will stay connected, cool, powered and streaming for a full day. YouTube has no stated maximum live-stream duration, yet it may not archive a stream that runs longer than 12 hours.
What PRISM’s background setting does—and does not do
PRISM Live Studio’s Android guide says the app can continue broadcasting while running in the background, such as when you open another app or answer a call. To enable this behavior, open Android Settings and turn on Allow display over other apps for PRISM Live Studio. The exact route to that permission can vary by Android version and phone manufacturer.
This setting is about allowing background broadcasting. It is not a promise that streaming will continue with the screen off or that a particular phone can operate continuously for 24 hours. Check how your device behaves before relying on it. PRISM Live Studio’s FAQ identifies YouTube as a supported platform, but support for a destination is not an uptime guarantee.
Can YouTube stay live for 24 hours, and will it save the stream?
PRISM says YouTube has no maximum time limit for streaming. That means a 24-hour broadcast is possible in principle; it does not mean the broadcast will avoid interruptions.

Live duration and replay archiving are separate issues. PRISM says YouTube’s auto-archiving supports streams under 12 hours and warns that streams exceeding 12 hours may not be archived at all. If you need a replay, do not assume a 24-hour broadcast will produce a complete saved video. Consider ending and restarting the stream at intervals below 12 hours, and check current YouTube and PRISM guidance before settling on an archive workflow.

- You have at least 50 subscribers.
- Your channel has had no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days.
- Live streaming is enabled for the channel.
- Your Android device runs Android 8.0 or later.
First-time mobile live-stream activation may take up to 24 hours. YouTube also applies audience safeguards to mobile live streams from channels with fewer than 1,000 subscribers, so eligibility does not necessarily mean every channel can reach its full potential mobile audience. How to make a phone-based attempt less fragile
No published guidance establishes a particular Android phone setup as reliable for unattended 24/7 broadcasting. If you still want to try PRISM from a phone, test the exact phone, app version, network, power arrangement and YouTube account in advance, and make sure someone can check the stream status and restart it if it stops.

- Network: Use a stable connection with enough bandwidth for the stream. PRISM identifies unstable or insufficient wireless bandwidth as a possible cause of stream termination.
- Heat and workload: Close other apps that compete for processing and memory, and reduce heat generation. PRISM notes that heat and device-processing problems can affect stability. A compatible charger and cable may be needed for an extended session, but charging behavior and compatibility depend on the phone. A cooling accessory may help manage heat; it cannot guarantee uptime.
- Recovery: Have a way to see whether YouTube still reports the broadcast as live and to restart it. PRISM lists device problems, network instability, platform policy enforcement and platform time limits among possible reasons a stream can end.
- Archive needs: If keeping a YouTube replay matters, plan around the under-12-hour archiving guidance rather than assuming the full 24-hour stream will be saved.
These are precautions, not a tested recipe for uninterrupted operation. YouTube advises creators to monitor stream quality continuously; a phone-only broadcast should not be treated as unattended just because PRISM can run in the background.
When an encoder workflow makes more sense
YouTube distinguishes mobile streaming from streaming with an encoder. Its guidance recommends encoders for formats that need overlays or more production control and advises monitoring stream quality. Moving from a phone app to an encoder changes the operating approach, but it does not by itself guarantee uptime: the encoder, network, power and stream still need monitoring and a recovery plan.

For a documentary channel, that distinction matters if the goal is to loop prerecorded footage rather than broadcast live camera video. Choose a workflow that fits the source material and the amount of supervision you can provide.
