Can Owncast Schedule Different Prerecorded Videos to YouTube?

Owncast is an RTMP receiver, not a documented scheduler for prerecorded YouTube broadcasts. See how to schedule videos through YouTube and what it takes to add Owncast as another output.

Not by itself, according to Owncast’s documented workflow. Owncast accepts a live RTMP feed from broadcasting software; its documentation does not describe a scheduler that selects prerecorded videos and sends them onward to YouTube. To schedule different videos on YouTube, create scheduled broadcasts in YouTube Studio and use an encoder or playback system that sends the chosen video to YouTube. Owncast can be another destination for that encoder, but that parallel-output setup is an implementation option to verify—not a documented, tested Owncast feature.

What Owncast does—and does not document

Owncast’s documented role is to receive an incoming broadcast over RTMP. Its documentation says, “In general Owncast is compatible with any software that uses RTMP to broadcast to a remote server.” The server accepts the stream key at the /live/ path, on TCP port 1935 by default; the port can be changed in server configuration. See Owncast’s broadcasting documentation.

That is an ingest workflow: an encoder sends a live audio-video feed to Owncast. The documentation does not describe Owncast choosing among prerecorded files on a timetable or relaying its incoming stream to YouTube. This is a conclusion about the documented workflow, not proof that no plugin or custom-built relay could ever do so.

How to schedule separate prerecorded videos on YouTube

  1. Create a scheduled live broadcast in YouTube Studio. YouTube’s help guide describes creating a stream from the Manage tab in Live Control Room. Set up a distinct scheduled event for each broadcast you want to present as its own YouTube video.
  2. Configure a playback encoder. Choose an encoder or scheduled-playback system that can play the intended prerecorded file at the right time and send it to YouTube’s ingest server using the server URL and stream key shown for that event. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains the connection workflow.
  3. Connect and check the preview. Start the encoder when the event is due. YouTube says to use Live Control Room once the stream preview appears; depending on the setup, an operator may still need to click Go live. A scheduled event does not itself start playback of a file—the encoder or playback system must do that.
  4. Repeat with the next file and event. Confirm that each scheduled broadcast is bound to the intended file and stream key. YouTube’s API documentation distinguishes a broadcast (a particular video/event) from a stream (the audio-video feed): one stream resource can be reused for broadcasts at different times, with only one event live at a time. The API model does not schedule or play prerecorded files on its own; see YouTube’s Live Streaming API documentation.

YouTube states that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived after they end. That can matter when choosing separate events for individual videos rather than one continuous feed; check YouTube’s current streaming guidance for event setup and archive details.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Including Owncast as a second destination

If the same playback should appear on both YouTube and Owncast, the encoder would need to send separate outputs to the two destinations: YouTube’s ingest URL and stream key for the scheduled event, plus Owncast’s RTMP endpoint and stream key. This follows from the documented endpoints, but the sources do not specify or test a particular dual-output configuration for a playlist scheduler. Check that the exact encoder supports multiple simultaneous outputs and can schedule the correct file; then verify it accepts Owncast’s RTMP destination.

Owncast recommends H.264 video and AAC audio for compatibility, with a keyframe interval of two seconds. Capacity depends on the Owncast server, network, and processing resources. Its technical documentation covers these considerations. Owncast’s FFmpeg instructions show sending an encoded feed to Owncast, but the example captures camera and audio; it is not a ready-made prerecorded-file playlist scheduler. In FFmpeg, -g counts frames, so at 60 fps -g 120 corresponds to a two-second keyframe interval.

Ways to handle scheduled playback

Approach What it can do What to verify
YouTube Studio plus a software encoder or playback scheduler Schedule YouTube broadcasts and send the selected prerecorded file to YouTube’s ingest endpoint. Whether playback starts automatically at the scheduled time, whether a person must click Go live after preview, and whether the software supports a second Owncast output.
AJA HELO Plus with optional PlayToStream YouTube’s encoder guide describes PlayToStream as able to schedule prerecorded media directly to YouTube Live without a computer. Current availability and configuration, and whether any separate Owncast output is supported. The cited YouTube guide does not establish Owncast compatibility.
Custom multi-output or automation workflow Potentially coordinate a YouTube broadcast with an Owncast RTMP destination. Scheduling behavior, file selection, stream-key handling, reconnection, and simultaneous-output support for the exact software or system. These capabilities are not established for a particular setup here.

Or let it run in the cloud

For a YouTube-only 24/7 prerecorded-video stream, StreamNeo is the #1 option to try first: it loops uploaded videos from the cloud at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, with the first day free. Upload your video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, and the monthly plan is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo sends to YouTube only; it does not provide an Owncast destination. See StreamNeo or start the free day.

Troubleshooting the scheduled stream

  • YouTube shows no preview: Check that the encoder is running and using the correct event’s server URL and stream key. Confirm that the selected file has started playing and that the encoder can reach YouTube.
  • The preview appears but the event is not live: YouTube’s scheduled-stream workflow may require an operator to click Go live in Live Control Room after preview appears.
  • Owncast does not receive the feed: Confirm the encoder is sending to the Owncast RTMP endpoint with the stream key on the /live/ path, and that the configured port is reachable. The default is TCP 1935 unless changed in Owncast configuration.
  • Playback works on YouTube but not Owncast, or vice versa: Test each output separately, then check whether the encoder supports simultaneous destinations and whether the two endpoints use their respective stream keys. A successful YouTube output does not establish that the tool supports Owncast.
  • Video quality or stability is poor: Check the encoder’s output settings, network capacity, and server processing headroom. For Owncast, H.264, AAC, and a two-second keyframe interval are its documented compatibility recommendations; the quality a deployment can sustain varies with available resources.
  • The archive is missing or unexpected: YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived when they end. For longer streams or other archive behavior, consult YouTube’s current help guidance rather than assuming the same rule applies.

Copyright and monetization checks

A scheduled broadcast still needs to comply with YouTube’s rules. Confirm that you have the necessary rights to the prerecorded video, soundtrack, and any included material before scheduling; prerecorded playback does not make copyrighted content exempt. For a channel built around repeated or reused material, review YouTube’s copyright and monetization requirements, not just whether the encoder can keep a stream connected. Scheduling and technical delivery do not guarantee that a broadcast will remain available or qualify for monetization.
