Yes. OBS lists MKV, MOV, and MP4 as supported file types for its built-in Media Source, but that source handles individual files. To play a playlist, use OBS’s VLC Video source and install a version of VLC that matches your OBS architecture. The file extension alone cannot guarantee that every video will decode correctly.
Choose the OBS source that fits your files
| OBS source | Best for | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Media Source | One local video or audio file | OBS lists .mkv, .mov, and .mp4 as supported video file types. It is built into OBS. |
| VLC Video | A playlist of local media files | Requires VLC installed. Use 64-bit VLC with 64-bit OBS, or match the architecture if using 32-bit OBS. Its properties include playlist, loop, shuffle, caching, audio-track, and subtitle options. |
OBS documents these file types and source behaviors in its Media Sources documentation. For a playlist, add VLC Video rather than trying to make a single-file Media Source act as a playlist.
Why the extension is not the whole compatibility test
MKV, MOV, and MP4 are container formats: a container holds encoded video and audio. Two files with the same extension can contain different codecs or profiles, and a listed extension does not guarantee that every such file will play on every operating system or OBS setup. OBS’s Audio/Video Formats Guide explains that container and codec support varies.
If a file fails, check the codecs inside that specific file, not just its name. Test the actual media in the OBS and VLC installation you plan to use; the documentation cannot establish whether an individual file is valid or decodable on your computer.

Set up a playlist in OBS
- Install VLC. Download and install the build with the same architecture as OBS. A 64-bit OBS installation requires 64-bit VLC.
- Add the source. In the OBS scene where the playlist should appear, select Sources → + → VLC Video. If VLC Video is unavailable, first confirm VLC is installed and its architecture matches OBS.
- Build the playlist. In the source properties, add the media files and put them in the intended playback order. OBS documents playlist looping as on by default and shuffle as off by default; check the properties rather than assuming the desired behavior.
- Review playback options. Confirm loop and shuffle settings, then check any relevant audio-track or subtitle options. Keep the source visible in the scene and confirm its size and position in the preview.
- Test every item and its audio. Let each file play in OBS. Verify picture, sound, transitions between files, and the order or looping behavior you expect. If one item fails, inspect its codecs and profile and consult the OBS formats guide.
- Test the outgoing YouTube stream. Run a private or otherwise suitable test before the intended broadcast, and check YouTube stream health. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement representative of the planned stream.
Keep local playback separate from YouTube ingest settings
OBS decodes the playlist locally, places its picture and sound into the scene, then encodes and sends an outgoing live stream to YouTube. YouTube does not receive the playlist files themselves. That means the playlist’s MKV, MOV, or MP4 container does not need to match the outgoing stream protocol or codec.
Configure OBS’s encoder for the YouTube ingest path you select. YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance covers RTMP/RTMPS and lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video options; it recommends RTMPS. The page also provides frame-rate, keyframe, and bitrate guidance, including up to 60 fps and a recommended two-second keyframe frequency (not exceeding four seconds). Use its current guidance for the settings appropriate to your resolution, frame rate, and ingest route; these are outgoing-stream settings, not requirements for each local playlist file.

YouTube also documents HLS ingest separately in its HLS setup guide. HLS requires TS segments lasting one to four seconds, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT, and no encryption other than HTTPS. This transport playlist is distinct from the VLC Video playlist of local movie files.
Troubleshoot common playlist problems
- VLC Video is missing: Install VLC and make sure its 32- or 64-bit architecture matches OBS. Restart OBS after installation if the source still does not appear.
- One file shows black or will not play: The extension may be supported while the contained codec, profile, or file itself is not usable in that setup. Check the actual codecs and test the file independently; do not infer compatibility from .mkv, .mov, or .mp4 alone.
- Picture plays but audio is absent: Check that the file contains an audio track, review VLC Video’s audio-track selection, and confirm the source is reaching the OBS audio mixer. Verify sound in the test stream as well as the local preview.
- Items play in the wrong order or repeat unexpectedly: Review playlist order and the loop and shuffle settings in VLC Video properties. Loop is documented as enabled by default and shuffle disabled.
- OBS preview works but YouTube reports a problem: Local file decoding and live ingest are separate stages. Check OBS encoder and protocol settings against YouTube’s current guidance, then use YouTube’s stream-health feedback during a test.
- The stream looks or sounds different to viewers: YouTube transcodes the received live stream into viewer formats. Compare OBS’s outgoing stream and YouTube stream-health status rather than expecting the local file to be passed through unchanged.
