The show combines science fiction with horror, frightening imagery, violence, language, and mature themes. A 12-year-old’s comfort with those elements matters, and later seasons may be more intense than the first.
What the TV-14 rating means
Netflix lists Stranger Things as TV-14 in the United States. Netflix defines TV-14 as “Parents strongly cautioned” and says it “may not be suitable for ages under 14.” Netflix says ratings reflect the frequency and impact of mature material, including violence, sex, adult language, nudity, and substance use. The rating is a caution, not a guarantee that every child under 14 will react the same way.
Ratings can vary by country, and Netflix says the overall series rating may differ from a particular season’s rating. The UK listing, for example, shows 15. Check the title page and the season your child plans to watch in your own Netflix region. Netflix’s maturity ratings and parental controls
What may concern a 12-year-old
The series is tagged “Scary” and “Horror” on Netflix. Its premise involves a missing child, secret experiments, and supernatural threats. Common Sense Media’s editorial guides flag violence, gore, frightening imagery, language, and mature themes. These guides describe content to consider; they are not official age ratings or a substitute for a parent’s judgment.

How the seasons compare
The concerns are not necessarily the same from season to season. Common Sense Media recommends the Season 4 guide for ages 14+ and describes its violence as more intense than in earlier seasons, including bloody injury and a concussion. Its Season 5 guide also says violence is more intense than in previous seasons and describes soldiers mutilating corpses in Vietnam.
| Season or scope | What the cited guide highlights |
|---|---|
| Series guide | Violence, gore, frightening imagery, language, mature themes, and a graphic rat sequence (Common Sense Media) |
| Season 1 | Frightening peril, dead bodies, bloody imagery, language, and sexual material (Common Sense Media) |
| Season 4 | More intense violence than earlier seasons; bloody injury and a concussion (Common Sense Media, 14+ recommendation) |
| Season 5 | More intense violence than previous seasons; a description of soldiers mutilating corpses in Vietnam (Common Sense Media) |
Those examples do not amount to a complete scene-by-scene inventory of every season. They do show why a parent should consider the whole series rather than deciding based only on its young characters or the first season.

How to decide for your child
- Check the local listing. On Netflix, open Stranger Things and review the maturity rating and content advisories for the season your child would watch. The rating can differ by region and by season.
- Think about your child’s response to horror. Consider whether monsters, gore, dead bodies, or long stretches of suspense are likely to upset them. No single age threshold predicts how every child will react.
- Preview or watch together if you are unsure. You can stop if the material is too frightening or disturbing for your child. This is a practical option, not a guarantee that the show is suitable.
- Use Netflix’s controls if you decide to wait. Netflix lets parents set profile maturity limits and block particular shows or movies. See Netflix’s instructions for ratings and parental controls.
Sources and limits
Netflix’s U.S. series listing and Help Center provide the rating, rating definition, and information about regional and season variation. The content examples above come from Common Sense Media’s independent editorial guides to the series and Seasons 1, 4, and 5. These guides identify concerns and examples but do not provide a complete inventory for every episode.
