Yes—Pavan K. Varma argues that modern readers can enjoy Tulsidas’s Ramcharitmanas, but many may benefit from guidance. The Awadhi language and the epic’s scale can make a start daunting; Varma’s answer is to introduce readers through selected passages, Hindi and English translations, and commentary. That is a welcoming route into the work, not a replacement for reading it whole or a guarantee that every reader will find it easy.
Ramcharitmanas: a literary and devotional work
In an excerpt from the introduction to his book, published by Scroll.in on April 3, 2020, Varma presents the Ramcharitmanas as both devotional literature and a literary achievement. He distinguishes Tulsidas’s work from the earlier Sanskrit Ramayana associated with Valmiki, describing it as a shorter telling with its own poetic and devotional qualities.
Varma’s case for its continuing appeal is not that readers must approach it as a historical monument. He argues that its poetry, devotion, and treatment of the story of Ram can still reward readers today. Whether it does so for a particular reader will depend in part on language, expectations, and the kind of reading experience they want.
Why the language and length can be barriers
Awadhi and access
Varma describes the Ramcharitmanas as an Awadhi composition. He sees Tulsidas’s choice of a language understood by ordinary people, rather than Sanskrit, as significant to the history of vernacular devotional literature. As Varma puts it, “It is significant that Tulsi decided to write the work in Awadhi, not Sanskrit.” This is Varma’s interpretation of the choice and its importance.

That vernacular language may have broadened access for its original audience, but it does not mean every contemporary reader will readily understand the text. Readers unfamiliar with Awadhi may need a translation or commentary to follow individual stanzas and their context.
The scale of the epic
Varma reports that the epic has 12,800 lines, 1,073 stanzas, and seven sections, or kandas. These are figures from his 2020 excerpt, not an independently verified count against a critical edition. He argues that the work’s length, alongside its language, can keep willing readers from finishing it or fully understanding its stanzas.

For Varma, those obstacles are reasons to make the work easier to enter, not grounds for dismissing it. A reader can begin with guidance and decide whether to continue into the complete text.
Varma’s guided way into the work
The Greatest Ode to Lord Ram: Tulsidas’s Ramcharitmanas, Selections & Commentaries offers the approach Varma proposes: selected passages, translations in Hindi and English, and commentary. The commentary addresses context, background, characters, reasoning, and meaning, helping readers follow passages rather than encounter them without support.

Varma describes the intention this way: “The sincere attempt of my book is to bring selections of Tulsidas’s great ode to Ram to the largest numbers of readers in a readable, accessible and enjoyable form.” The book is a selection, so it offers an introduction and interpretive guidance rather than the complete epic.

Choose a reading path that fits your aim
| Reading path | What it offers | Best fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Varma’s guided selection | Chosen passages, Hindi and English translations, and commentary | Readers who want context and an accessible introduction | It is not the complete epic |
| A complete edition | The opportunity to follow the whole work | Readers who want the full narrative and are ready to commit to a longer text | Translation quality, commentary, and current availability depend on the edition; no particular complete edition is established here |
When choosing an edition, consider whether it contains selections or the full text, which language support it provides, how much commentary it includes, and whether you prefer a guided introduction or an unabridged reading. A translation can make the text more accessible, while commentary can explain context that a translation alone may not supply.
