H.265

Can I Use H.265 HEVC for a YouTube Live Playlist Stream?

YouTube Live accepts H.265 HEVC over HLS as well as RTMP/RTMPS. Here are the playlist, segment, bitrate, HDR, and encoder checks to make before streaming.

Yes. YouTube Live accepts H.265 (HEVC) for HLS playlist ingestion, and its general encoder guidance also lists HEVC for RTMP/RTMPS. For an HLS stream, the encoder must produce a YouTube-compatible playlist and transport-stream segments; choosing HEVC alone is not enough.

Choose HLS or RTMP/RTMPS

HLS is a segmented workflow with specific playlist and delivery requirements. RTMP/RTMPS is an alternative continuous-stream workflow. YouTube’s documentation supports HEVC with both; the right choice depends on what your encoder can output and the latency you can accept.

Decision HLS RTMP/RTMPS
HEVC support YouTube explicitly supports HEVC for HLS ingestion. YouTube lists H.265 (HEVC) in its RTMP/RTMPS encoder settings.
Delivery requirements Requires TS segments, a rolling playlist, five or fewer outstanding segments, no byte-range addressing, and HTTPS POST/PUT. Use the encoder settings and stream key for the selected RTMP/RTMPS workflow.
Latency Higher than a continuous stream; YouTube’s ultra-low-latency option is unavailable for HLS. Use the latency options available for the selected stream.
HDR Supported with HEVC and compatible HDR signaling; follow YouTube’s HLS output requirements. YouTube recommends H.265 over RTMP(S) for HDR when the encoder supports the required capabilities.
First compatibility check Confirm the encoder generates YouTube-compliant HEVC HLS. Confirm HEVC output over RTMPS and consult YouTube’s current encoder settings.

This comparison reflects YouTube’s protocol and codec guidance, not independent testing of encoders. See YouTube’s live encoder settings, HLS setup guidance, and HDR streaming guidance.

Configure an HEVC HLS playlist

  1. Select the protocol: In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select a stream key configured for HLS. Use the HLS server URL shown there; YouTube’s HLS guidance specifies an HTTPS URL. Use the provided backup URL if setting up backup ingestion.
  2. Set the encoder output: Choose HEVC video and an audio codec supported by YouTube’s HLS guidance: AAC, AC3, or EAC3. Configure the encoder to send using HTTPS POST or PUT. YouTube does not support encryption other than HTTPS for this workflow.
  3. Meet the playlist contract: Output Transport Stream (TS) segments of 1–4 seconds and a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments. Do not use byte-range addressing.
  4. Protect the stream key: Treat it like a password. Do not put it in a public playlist, screenshot, document, or stream description.
  5. Test before going live: Check the Live Control Room preview and stream health with representative audio and movement. YouTube recommends leaving upload-bandwidth headroom; its streaming tips specify 20% as recommended.

Because HLS delivers segments, it has more latency than continuous RTMP, and YouTube disables ultra-low latency for HLS. Within the supported 1–4 second segment range, shorter segments can reduce the segment contribution to delay, but total end-to-end latency also depends on the rest of the workflow.

Use YouTube’s encoder settings for bitrate and keyframes

For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate encoding, frame rates up to 60 fps, and a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds). Its recommended bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate, so use the current table for the exact profile you are sending rather than transferring a figure from another resolution.

HEVC profile in YouTube’s published settings Recommended bitrate Minimum bitrate
1080p at 30 fps 10 Mbps 4 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 12 Mbps 4 Mbps
2160p (4K) at 60 fps 35 Mbps 10 Mbps

These are YouTube-published settings, not performance guarantees; the page does not state a publication year. Leave upload-bandwidth headroom and check the current YouTube bitrate table for your chosen profile. For HLS, also follow the protocol-specific segment and playlist requirements rather than treating RTMP settings as a substitute.

For HDR, match the whole signal chain

YouTube currently supports HDR live video only with HEVC. The source and encoder need compatible 10-bit video, BT.2020 color primaries and matrix, and either ST 2084 PQ or HLG transfer characteristics, matched to the source. YouTube documents HDR over RTMP(S) and HLS; follow the instructions for your specific encoder path.

For HDR stream keys, YouTube instructs users to use HLS and leave “Turn on manual resolution” unchecked. Its documentation names Cobalt encoders and Telestream Lightspeed Live Stream as compatible examples, but does not establish that every model in either range supports the workflow. Check the exact model’s manual and test the configured stream. See YouTube’s HDR guidance.

Validate the encoder and stream before an event

  • Confirm the stream key protocol matches the encoder output: HLS or RTMP/RTMPS.
  • Check the specific encoder model and software version for HEVC output over that protocol; a manufacturer name alone does not establish compatibility.
  • For HLS, inspect a test playlist for TS segments lasting 1–4 seconds, rolling behavior, no more than five outstanding segments, and no byte ranges.
  • For HDR, confirm 10-bit depth, BT.2020, and the correct PQ or HLG signaling from source through encoder.
  • Send representative sound and motion, watch the Live Control Room preview, and monitor stream health.
  • Review YouTube’s current encoder settings and HLS requirements before a scheduled broadcast; platform guidance and encoder compatibility can change.

Troubleshoot common HEVC HLS problems

Symptom Likely check What to do
YouTube does not receive the stream The stream key protocol may not match the encoder, or the destination URL may be incorrect. Verify that the key is configured for HLS, copy the HLS server URL from Live Control Room, and confirm the encoder sends to it over HTTPS.
The playlist is rejected or playback is unstable Segment duration, playlist behavior, addressing, or request method may not meet YouTube’s HLS requirements. Use 1–4 second TS segments, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, no byte ranges, and HTTPS POST/PUT.
Video appears but audio does not The selected audio output may not be one of the audio codecs listed for YouTube HLS, or the encoder’s audio configuration may be wrong. Check the encoder’s output and choose AAC, AC3, or EAC3; verify audio in the Live Control Room preview.
HDR looks wrong or is not recognized Bit depth, color primaries, matrix, transfer function, or manual-resolution setting may not match the source or YouTube’s HDR workflow. Check 10-bit HEVC, BT.2020, PQ or HLG signaling, and leave “Turn on manual resolution” unchecked for the HDR stream key.
Stream health reports connection or quality issues Upload capacity may not leave enough headroom for the selected stream profile. Use YouTube’s bitrate recommendation for the actual resolution and frame rate, leave the recommended upload headroom, then retest with representative content.
