YouTube’s RSS feature imports selected podcast episodes as videos; a YouTube Live broadcast instead needs an incoming audio/video stream sent through a live-encoder workflow. To play an episode during a live event, send its audio along with compatible video to a YouTube broadcast. YouTube’s documentation does not confirm whether its RSS import accepts password-protected or otherwise authenticated feed URLs.

| Play an episode as part of a live event | Create a YouTube Live broadcast and send it an incoming audio/video stream using an encoder workflow | A live broadcast with a chosen audience setting: public, private, or unlisted. YouTube Live Streaming API overview |
RSS ingestion is an episode-upload route, not a documented way to have YouTube Live pull audio directly from a feed. The Live API describes the incoming stream as the audio/video input associated with a viewer-facing broadcast; it does not require a particular encoder brand or model.
How to play a podcast episode on a private YouTube livestream
- Create a YouTube Live broadcast. Set up the event in YouTube Studio and choose the intended visibility before inviting or sharing it.
- Send the episode through a live-encoder workflow. Provide the episode audio and compatible video as the incoming stream associated with the broadcast. This sends the media to Live; it does not make YouTube fetch the RSS feed.
- Set access deliberately. A private broadcast is limited to explicitly invited viewers. An unlisted broadcast can be watched by anyone with its link. Use private when you need invitation-based access; use unlisted when link access is sufficient. YouTube Live Streaming API overview
- Check rights before going live. Review music, clips, and other third-party material in the episode. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content matches and may replace a stream with a placeholder, interrupt it, or terminate it. A license does not necessarily prevent a match: the rights holder may need to allowlist your channel. YouTube Help: Copyright issues with live streams
What if the podcast feed itself is private?
YouTube’s RSS setup instructions describe submitting the feed URL and verifying ownership with a code sent to the email address in the feed. They do not establish whether YouTube accepts password-protected feed URLs, tokenized URLs, or other authenticated feeds. Treat compatibility as unconfirmed; check with YouTube or your podcast host before relying on RSS import for a private feed. YouTube Help: Publish or disconnect episodes from an RSS feed on YouTube
This uncertainty does not prevent the live-encoder approach: it does not require YouTube to retrieve the RSS feed. You still need access to the episode audio so you can send it through the live workflow.

RSS availability depends on the channel owner’s location
YouTube RSS feed delivery is available only in listed countries and regions. Check YouTube’s current eligibility list for the location of the channel owner before choosing RSS ingestion. This regional condition concerns the RSS route; the cited Live API overview does not establish a regional restriction for playing an episode through a live broadcast.
