Companies cannot be shown to reliably write advertisements into complete dreams. Research has demonstrated a more limited technique: cues delivered around sleep onset can influence the themes people later report. In 2021, Molson Coors promoted a voluntary branded experience built around that idea. Researchers objected to commercial dream influence and warned about possible future use without consent—but that hypothetical is not evidence that covert dream advertising is happening.
What targeted dream incubation can—and cannot—do
Targeted dream incubation (TDI) uses cues near the transition into sleep to encourage a selected theme in subsequent dream reports. In a 2020 study, Adam Haar Horowitz, Tony J. Cunningham, Pattie Maes, and Robert Stickgold described Dormio, a research protocol using repeated auditory prompts during the hypnagogic period—the transitional state between wakefulness and sleep. The device was designed to detect sleep onset and deliver prompts within a controlled experiment. The study supports cueing reported themes in an experimental setting; it does not show reliable control over an entire dream or prove that advertising works this way during ordinary sleep.
MIT described Dormio as an app paired with a wearable sleep-tracking sensor, developed for research into dreams, creativity, memory, and sleep. MIT’s overview presents it as research technology, not an established consumer advertising product.
What Coors did in 2021
Molson Coors Beverage Company promoted a branded dream-incubation experience in a February 4, 2021 press release. The campaign paired a dream-inducing film with an eight-hour soundscape intended to evoke relaxing imagery such as waterfalls and mountains alongside Coors products. The company invited people to watch the film three times, play the soundscape while sleeping, and advertised a Zayn Malik Instagram Live component and a promotional incentive. That release is a company promotion, not independent evidence that participants reliably dreamed about the brand or that the campaign increased purchases.

Documented campaign versus feared future use
| Question | What the cited material establishes |
|---|---|
| Was a company-branded experience promoted? | Yes. Molson Coors publicly described a voluntary video-and-soundscape experience in 2021. |
| Did it reliably implant ads in full dreams? | Not established. The research supports influence on reported themes under controlled conditions, not complete dream control or this campaign’s effectiveness. |
| Is covert advertising through ordinary sleep devices documented? | No. The cited sources discuss it as a possible future concern, not an ongoing demonstrated practice. |
| Was the Coors experience presented as disclosed and voluntary? | Deirdre Barrett’s response says it was disclosed and required active participation. |
In a June 7, 2021 open letter, Robert Stickgold, Antonio Zadra, and Adam Haar argued that commercial attempts to influence dream content raise ethical concerns, particularly around products involving addictive substances and any future system that might act without a sleeper’s awareness or permission. They wrote: “Our dreams cannot become just another playground for corporate advertisers.” The open letter is an argument by researchers, not a legal ruling or proof of passive advertising.
The same page includes Barrett’s response, which disputes aspects of the letter’s framing and emphasizes that the Coors experience was disclosed and voluntary. That distinction matters: an advertised activity that requires someone to opt in is not the same scenario as a device covertly cueing a sleeping person. The exchange raises ethical questions but does not settle the legal or empirical debate.

Could dream advertising happen without permission?
The sources cited here do not establish that it is happening. They describe a research method for cueing themes near sleep onset, one company’s voluntary promotion, and researchers’ concern that future bedroom devices might be used passively or without meaningful consent. Moving from experimental cueing to covert, reliable advertising would require capabilities and evidence these sources do not provide.
The central issue is therefore both technical and ethical. Current evidence does not demonstrate dependable control of complete dreams or commercial effectiveness. But if future systems can influence sleep-related experiences, questions about disclosure, consent, and who controls devices in the bedroom become important before such practices are normalized.
