It may, but there is no official guarantee that an M2 Mac mini will broadcast a particular 4K60 playlist continuously without interruption. Apple lists hardware video encode and decode engines in the 2023 M2 Mac mini, and OBS supports Apple Silicon hardware H.264 streaming. But sustained performance depends on the source videos, OBS workload, settings, macOS power behavior, and a stable upload connection. Test the exact setup for the run time you need before leaving it unattended.
“Run a playlist” can also mean watching a 4K YouTube live stream on the Mac rather than broadcasting videos from it. Those are different jobs, so the requirements below separate them.
Watching a 4K YouTube Live stream is different from broadcasting one
If you mean watching
For watching 4K UHD, YouTube recommends a sustained internet speed of 20 Mbps. That is a download recommendation for playback, not an upload target for creating a live stream. YouTube also advises using an up-to-date browser and a good internet connection; premium video such as live streams may need faster connections and more processing power. YouTube playback system requirements.
If you mean broadcasting a playlist
The Mac must play or source each video, render any scenes or transitions, encode the outgoing signal, and upload it to YouTube. A viewer-speed figure does not establish whether the Mac or its internet connection can sustain this workload.

What the M2 Mac mini’s specifications establish
Apple lists the 2023 Mac mini with M2 as having an 8-core CPU, 10-core GPU, memory options of 8 GB, 16 GB, or 24 GB, and a media engine with hardware-accelerated H.264, HEVC, ProRes, and ProRes RAW, plus video decode, video encode, and ProRes encode/decode engines. These capabilities support the feasibility of video work, but they do not certify a continuous 4K60 YouTube broadcast from a particular playlist. Apple: Mac mini (2023) – Tech Specs.
Apple separately says the M2 Mac mini (2023) can support an external display up to 4K (3840 Ă— 2160) at 60 Hz over HDMI, depending on display configuration. That is a display-output specification, not evidence that a streaming workload will run continuously. Apple: How many displays can be connected to Mac mini (2023) with M2 chip.

Set YouTube’s 4K60 ingest settings to match your encoder
For 2160p at 60 fps, YouTube’s live encoder guidance gives different bitrate figures by codec. These are YouTube recommendations and minimums, not guarantees of stability; allow upload headroom rather than planning to operate at the minimum.
| Ingest codec | YouTube recommended bitrate | YouTube minimum bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| AV1 or H.265 (HEVC) | 35 Mbps — YouTube, 2026 | 10 Mbps — YouTube, 2026 |
| H.264 | 50 Mbps — YouTube, 2026 | 14 Mbps — YouTube, 2026 |
Use the recommended figure for the codec you actually select; do not confuse the 20 Mbps playback recommendation with live upload needs. YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS as ingest protocols, supports H.264, H.265, and AV1, recommends constant bitrate (CBR), and recommends a two-second keyframe interval (not more than four seconds). It recommends RTMPS. At 4K, YouTube says the low-latency option is unavailable; streams are optimized for quality at normal latency. YouTube: Encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

OBS can use Apple Silicon hardware encoding, with workload caveats
OBS lists Apple Silicon among supported macOS systems and requires macOS 11 or later on its system-requirements page. OBS cautions that meeting its basic requirements does not ensure streaming or recording at any particular resolution, frame rate, encoder, or scene complexity. OBS: System Requirements.
OBS documents Apple’s VideoToolbox as a supported hardware-encoding path on Apple Silicon and Intel Macs, and says streaming with it on Apple Silicon is supported with H.264. Hardware encoding moves work to a specialized processor, but OBS provides no M2 Mac mini benchmark or continuous-runtime guarantee for a 4K60 playlist. OBS: Hardware Encoding.

Build and test the broadcast before relying on it unattended
- Identify the exact workload. Confirm each source video’s resolution and frame rate, how the playlist advances, and whether the OBS scene adds overlays, transitions, filters, or multiple sources. Keep other demanding apps closed during the test. The memory configuration alone does not establish which workload will fit.
- Set the encoder and stream output. In OBS, choose an Apple Silicon hardware H.264 encoder if using VideoToolbox. Match the output to 2160p at 60 fps, use CBR, set a two-second keyframe interval, and select a bitrate within YouTube’s H.264 guidance. In YouTube Live Control Room, use the stream key and RTMPS ingest settings presented for the stream; never share the key publicly.
- Check upload stability. Confirm sustained upload capacity with headroom above the chosen bitrate, not just a brief speed-test peak. Wired Ethernet can reduce one source of local wireless variability, but it cannot guarantee a stable route to YouTube.
- Prevent the Mac from interrupting the test. Check macOS power and sleep settings so the Mac does not sleep during the planned run. Confirm the intended display and peripherals do not trigger a sleep or shutdown behavior when unattended.
- Run a representative rehearsal. YouTube recommends testing with audio and video motion similar to the planned event. Test across playlist transitions and for the intended unattended duration. Monitor YouTube stream health and messages, and inspect OBS dropped frames and encoder status; a short successful test does not prove a longer run.
- Test recovery, not just steady playback. Verify what happens if the network briefly drops, OBS stops, or YouTube disconnects. Decide who or what will notice and restart the stream; do not assume automatic recovery unless you have tested it in your own setup.
Common symptoms and what to check
- YouTube reports poor or unstable stream health: Check sustained upload capacity, bitrate, and network interruptions. Match the bitrate to the ingest codec and leave headroom.
- Frames are dropped or the picture stutters: Separate network-related drops from rendering or encoding strain. Simplify the OBS scene, remove unnecessary filters and concurrent tasks, then test again at the intended resolution and frame rate.
- The stream looks smooth but not like 4K60: Verify the source files, OBS output resolution and frame rate, and YouTube ingest settings. A 4K display or a 4K source alone does not establish that the outgoing live stream is 4K60.
- The playlist stops or the broadcast ends after an interruption: Check the playlist handoff, source playback, OBS state, and YouTube’s stream status. Test a real interruption and confirm the recovery steps before relying on unattended operation.
- The Mac is unavailable after being left alone: Review sleep and power behavior, then repeat the full-length test. A machine that sleeps cannot continue encoding and uploading.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the aim is to keep uploaded videos live on YouTube rather than to use this Mac as the broadcaster, StreamNeo runs the loop in the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot regardless of quality; and it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card.
Monthly: $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube and uploaded videos, not camera broadcasts. See StreamNeo, or start the free day.
