The result depends on the Mac mini’s exact generation and condition, the stream’s resolution and frame rate, the OBS scene and encoder, and the reliability of power and internet. Test the complete setup before relying on it.
What determines whether your Mac mini can handle it?
“Intel Mac mini” covers machines with different processors and configurations. For example, Apple’s 2018 Mac mini specifications list a quad-core 3.6GHz Core i3 configuration, six-core Core i5 and configurable Core i7 options, memory configurations up to 64GB, and Gigabit Ethernet. Those specifications describe the 2018 model, not every Intel Mac mini.
OBS lists an Intel or Apple Silicon CPU, an OpenGL 3.3-compatible GPU, and macOS 11 (Big Sur) or later among its macOS requirements. But the OBS Project cautions: “Having a compatible system does not guarantee that it is capable of streaming or recording using OBS Studio.” It says workload varies with encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. Check the requirements for your installed OBS version at the OBS system requirements page.
A simple, static scene is a different workload from multiple live sources, animated overlays, browser sources, filters, capture devices, or high-resolution video. There is no single performance verdict for every Intel Mac mini; test the actual scene and settings you intend to use.

Choose the OBS encoder correctly on an Intel Mac
For an OBS livestream from an Intel Mac, use x264. OBS’s hardware encoding guidance says Intel Mac VideoToolbox streaming is unsupported because it lacks the constant-bitrate support required by most streaming services. The separate availability of Intel Mac H.264 VideoToolbox for recording does not mean it is supported for streaming.
Hardware encoders can move work away from the CPU, but OBS notes that older hardware encoders may deliver lower quality at the same bitrate than software encoding. That general trade-off does not override OBS’s Intel Mac streaming instruction: select x264 for the stream.

Match OBS output to YouTube’s ingest settings
Use YouTube’s current encoder settings and bitrate recommendations as a starting point, then choose a quality your upload connection can sustain reliably. YouTube recommends testing upload speed, testing the stream with representative movement and audio, and monitoring stream health and messages while live.

YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the stream data to and through Google’s servers. YouTube also transcodes incoming streams into output formats for viewers on different devices and networks.

Prepare the computer, network, and channel
- Identify the Mac. Check its model year and processor in Apple menu > About This Mac. Compare that hardware and macOS version with the OBS requirements for the version you plan to run.
- Build the real scene in OBS. Include the actual video sources, overlays, filters, and audio you plan to use. A test with a simpler scene will not establish how the production scene performs.
- Set the encoder and output. Select x264 for streaming on Intel Mac, then configure CBR, a two-second keyframe interval, and a resolution, frame rate, and bitrate suited to the workload and connection.
- Check upload capacity and test. Run an upload speed test, then conduct a private or otherwise appropriate test stream with representative audio and movement. YouTube advises testing before going live and monitoring stream health and messages.
- Prefer wired networking when practical. The 2018 Mac mini has Gigabit Ethernet. A cable can connect it to a wired network, but cannot add ISP upload bandwidth, prevent ISP outages, or guarantee stability.
- Enable YouTube live streaming ahead of launch. YouTube says first-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours. Follow its encoder setup guidance at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
What 24/7 operation does—and does not—promise
Apple, OBS, and YouTube do not certify a particular Intel Mac mini for unattended continuous operation. A successful test is useful evidence about your specific setup, but it is not a guarantee against later computer, power, network, software, or YouTube interruptions. Plan to monitor stream health and decide how you will respond if the feed stops.
Going live and preserving the broadcast as a recording are separate questions. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not promise that a 24/7 feed will be saved as one complete archive, nor does it say that a stream longer than 12 hours cannot remain live.
