Yes. You send YouTube one live feed at the resolution, frame rate, and bitrate chosen in your encoder; YouTube then transcodes that feed into multiple output formats for viewers. The viewer’s available quality options are not necessarily a fixed list for every stream, so do not promise that every broadcast will offer exactly 1080p, 720p, and lower resolutions.
How resolution works for a gaming rerun
A prerecorded rerun is treated as video played into an encoder, which sends it to YouTube Live. YouTube documents encoder broadcasts for gameplay and screen sharing, but does not describe a special rerun mode. Applying that workflow to prerecorded footage is a practical interpretation of its encoder guidance, not a separate platform feature. See YouTube’s encoder guidance.
The encoder’s output is the incoming live feed. YouTube says it automatically transcodes a live stream into “many different output formats” so viewers on different devices and networks can watch. Those viewer playback formats are not the same as the single resolution you send, and YouTube does not guarantee an identical playback-resolution menu for every broadcast. Inspect the player after your stream starts if specific options matter.
Choose an output that fits the footage and connection
- Start with the recording’s native resolution and frame rate. Choose an encoder output that makes sense for that footage; a larger output setting should not be treated as a guaranteed improvement to lower-resolution source material.
- Choose a bitrate and output quality your upload connection can sustain reliably. YouTube advises selecting a quality appropriate to the available connection.
- For live encoder settings, YouTube recommends CBR bitrate encoding and a two-second keyframe interval. Check the current guidance for the settings applicable to your output: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
- Test under conditions similar to the intended broadcast and monitor YouTube’s stream-health indicators. A stable test is more useful than assuming a particular resolution will work on an untested connection.
YouTube notes that 2160p streams do not have the “improve for low latency” option and use normal latency. Consider that if you are selecting 4K output and latency settings matter to your format.

Set up the prerecorded video as a live input
- Prepare the source. Use the gaming recording you intend to rerun. If it is already on the computer running the encoder, no capture card is needed simply to replay that file.
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create a stream. Select an encoder workflow and copy the stream key into the encoder’s YouTube destination settings. Treat the key as private: anyone with access to it may be able to send a feed to your stream.
- Set the encoder output. Choose resolution, frame rate, and bitrate to suit the source and reliable upload capacity. Use CBR and a two-second keyframe interval as YouTube’s recommended encoder settings.
- Play the recording into the encoder. Configure your playback/production setup so the video and any intended audio are included in the live output. Confirm the preview and stream health before making the broadcast public.
- Check the actual viewer player. Once live, inspect the quality options available in playback rather than promising a fixed ladder in advance.
- Keep a local copy and check the archive. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, and says 1440p and 2160p streams are also automatically archived. Streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. YouTube recommends keeping a local backup; verify what was retained in Studio. Details: YouTube live stream archives.
A capture card is only a possible component when bringing console gameplay into a computer-based encoder. It does not create YouTube’s playback formats, and it is unnecessary when the rerun file is already available to the encoder computer. Copyright and replay considerations
A rerun is still a public YouTube broadcast. Use footage, music, and other material you have the rights to stream; prerecorded status does not itself grant permission. A replay may appear as a channel video after the broadcast, but retention is subject to the archive limits above.
