Yes. A Raspberry Pi 5 is a plausible encoder for a simple, continuous rain-sounds YouTube stream, especially with a static or low-motion visual. But that is not proof it will run without interruption: no verified test establishes 24/7 uptime for this exact combination of Pi, software, power, cooling, network and content.
What the Pi 5 can—and cannot—be assumed to do
YouTube supports encoder-based live broadcasts, including H.264 video with AAC audio over RTMPS. Raspberry Pi has also published a technical paper on H.264 encoding performance for Pi 5-series computers. Together, these make the setup plausible; neither establishes a guaranteed maximum stream resolution or continuous runtime for your particular system. YouTube’s encoder guidance and the Raspberry Pi 5 specifications are useful starting references.
A rain loop with a still image or gently moving scene is a modest production compared with multiple live camera feeds. That is a practical workload judgment, not a measured Pi 5 benchmark. Raspberry Pi lists 4Kp60 HEVC decoding, but a decoder specification does not demonstrate HEVC encoding capability. Do not use it to infer that the Pi can encode a particular HEVC stream.
A sensible starting stream profile
For a straightforward first setup, configure the encoder for H.264 video and AAC audio, send it to YouTube over RTMPS if supported, and start at 720p30. YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends the following relevant settings:

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Setting | Starting value | Context |
|---|---|---|
| Video codec | H.264 | A conservative compatibility choice for this setup. |
| Resolution and frame rate | 720p30 | A practical starting profile, not a verified Pi 5 limit. |
| Video bitrate | 8 Mbps | YouTube’s recommended H.264 bitrate for 720p30 live ingestion. |
| Rate control | CBR | YouTube recommends constant bitrate. |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds | YouTube recommends 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds. |
| Audio | AAC | YouTube also accepts MP3 audio. |
| Ingest protocol | RTMPS | YouTube recommends encrypted RTMP when the encoder supports it. |
These are YouTube platform recommendations, not results from a Pi-specific performance test. If you change resolution, frame rate or bitrate, check the corresponding current guidance in YouTube’s live encoder settings and test the Pi under the intended load.
Prepare the Pi for continuous operation
Power and cooling
Raspberry Pi recommends a high-quality 5V/5A USB-C power supply and says the Pi 5 performs best with active cooling. Its guidance warns that an under-powered supply can cause problems. For a system intended to run for long periods, use an appropriate supply, arrange active cooling, and keep the board in a location where airflow is not blocked. See the Raspberry Pi 5 product specifications for the manufacturer’s current details.

Network capacity
YouTube recommends keeping 20% upload-bandwidth headroom. At the recommended 8 Mbps video bitrate for 720p30, that means the connection needs capacity beyond the stream itself; leave room for audio, protocol overhead and any other traffic rather than treating 8 Mbps as the entire connection requirement. Use a stable wired connection when practical, and measure upload performance during the hours the stream will run. YouTube notes that network interruptions can disrupt a live broadcast. Its streaming tips explain network and stream-health considerations.
Set up and test the YouTube broadcast
- Enable live streaming. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and follow the prompts to enable live streaming. First-time live enablement can take up to 24 hours, so do this before the planned launch. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
- Create or schedule the live stream. In Live Control Room, create the broadcast and locate its server URL and stream key. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or share it with anyone who should not be able to broadcast to your channel.
- Configure the Pi’s encoder. Enter YouTube’s server URL and stream key in the encoder. Use the H.264, AAC, RTMPS and 720p30 starting profile above, with CBR, 8 Mbps video bitrate and a 2-second keyframe interval.
- Start the encoder and preview. Send the feed to YouTube, then check the Live Control Room preview and stream health before making the broadcast public. Verify that the rain audio is audible, the picture is stable, and there are no persistent warnings.
- Run a long-duration test. Test for the length of time you actually expect to operate, not just long enough to see the preview appear. Watch for overheating, power instability, network drops, audio interruptions and encoder failures. A successful launch does not establish dependable 24/7 operation.
- Monitor during the broadcast. YouTube advises testing before a broadcast and monitoring stream health and audio/video quality during it. Have a way to check the Live Control Room and the Pi when problems arise. YouTube’s streaming tips cover testing and monitoring.
Rain audio, visuals and YouTube rules
Before streaming or monetizing a rain recording or visual loop, establish that you own the material or have permission that covers the intended use. A soundscape’s apparent simplicity does not establish its copyright status; recordings, compositions, samples and footage can have different owners or licence terms. Review the current YouTube copyright information and the terms of any material you use.

Rights to stream a work and eligibility to monetize a channel are separate questions. YouTube monetization depends on the channel’s eligibility and status as well as its content. A looping or reused format is not automatically a guarantee of approval. Check the current YouTube channel monetization policies before relying on ad revenue.
Common problems and what to check
- YouTube preview does not appear: Confirm live streaming has been enabled, the broadcast is active, and the encoder has the correct server URL and current stream key. Check for key-entry errors and confirm the encoder is actually sending data.
- Stream health warns of connection trouble: Check upload speed and stability at the time of the problem, reduce competing network traffic, and preserve YouTube’s recommended headroom. A speed result from a different time of day may not reflect the connection during the stream.
- Video drops or looks unstable: Check the encoder’s bitrate, CBR setting and keyframe interval against the profile, then inspect stream health. If the Pi is under sustained load, test a less demanding profile rather than assuming the board can maintain a higher one.
- Pi becomes unstable during long runs: Check the USB-C supply and cooling arrangement against Raspberry Pi’s recommendations. Also inspect the network and encoder logs; a stream interruption cannot be attributed to the board without checking the other parts of the system.
- Audio is missing or interrupted: Confirm the encoder is sending AAC or MP3 audio, that the correct input is selected, and that the rain recording plays continuously at the source. Check the YouTube preview and monitoring output.
- Stream stops after a network or YouTube interruption: Check whether the encoder is still running and whether it can reconnect with the same broadcast configuration. A local Pi setup depends on its own software and network recovery behavior; the cited specifications do not promise automatic recovery for this particular setup.
DIY Pi versus a cloud service
With a Pi, you control the hardware and encoder, but the stream depends on the Pi’s local power, cooling, network and software. A cloud service shifts the continuous playback off your home equipment. The right choice depends on whether you want to maintain the local setup or avoid keeping a computer and home connection involved.
