Yes—but only if your specific NAS can run an encoder that plays or loops the recording and sends a continuous stream to YouTube Live. A NAS that stores or plays video is not automatically capable of encoding and broadcasting it around the clock. Check the NAS model, operating system, encoder software, looping and reconnection support, processing capacity, and upload connection before relying on it.
For a documentary channel, the key distinction is between keeping a film file on a NAS and operating a dependable live broadcast. YouTube requires an encoder for the latter, and its archive and DVR behavior can limit what viewers can replay from a very long stream.
What a NAS needs to do
A prerecorded 24/7 broadcast is not simply a video file being available on your network. An encoder must read and, where necessary, encode the video and audio, then send the feed to YouTube Live continuously. The encoder also needs to keep playback going, handle the end of a file or playlist, and recover appropriately if the process or connection is interrupted.
YouTube describes the role this way: “An encoder converts your video into a digital format to stream on YouTube.” See YouTube’s encoder setup guide. The NAS must run compatible encoding software or provide a native feature that supports the intended prerecorded source—not merely store it or play it locally.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Check these requirements before choosing the NAS
Software, looping, and recovery
- Confirm that the exact NAS model and operating system support an encoder capable of sending a YouTube Live feed.
- Verify that the encoder can loop the file or playlist as required. YouTube’s general encoder setup guidance does not establish that every listed encoder can loop prerecorded media.
- Check how the software behaves after a network interruption, encoder crash, NAS reboot, or power loss. Determine whether it reconnects and resumes playback automatically, and whether it starts again after a reboot.
- Test access to the source files, audio continuity, and the live watch page. A process that starts successfully is not necessarily a process that will run unattended for days.
Encoding capacity and stream settings
Choose resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate that the NAS can sustain while encoding and serving its other responsibilities. YouTube’s current encoder guidance covers RTMP/RTMPS with H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 subject to codec and protocol constraints; check its published live encoder settings for the settings you intend to use.
For H.264, YouTube recommends an ingest bitrate of 5 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 8 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. These are platform recommendations for the stream, not a claim about the minimum speed of an internet plan. Encoding capability and a stable connection both matter.

Upload bandwidth and network stability
YouTube recommends keeping 20% upload-bandwidth headroom above the stream’s bitrate. Measure sustained upload capacity where the NAS will operate; a plan’s headline download speed does not establish upload capacity. YouTube warns that “A disruption on your connectivity could mean a broken stream.” Its streaming tips explain why a stable connection and adequate headroom matter.
Power, heat, and channel eligibility
- Run a full-duration test when practical, watching for thermal or resource problems as well as playback and network failures.
- A UPS sized for the NAS and network equipment may bridge a short power interruption, but it cannot ensure internet service or cover a prolonged outage.
- Check the channel’s live-stream eligibility and any restrictions before building around a broadcast. YouTube says first-time live-stream enablement can take up to 24 hours.
Set up the YouTube side and test the full chain
- Enable live streaming. Confirm that the channel can go live and allow for YouTube’s stated first-time enablement delay of up to 24 hours.
- Create or select the stream in Live Control Room. Use the stream’s YouTube-provided server URL and stream key in the encoder. Prefer the recommended RTMPS ingest path when supported by your encoder and the settings you plan to use.
- Protect the stream key. Treat it like a password: only enter it into trusted software, do not publish or share it, and replace it in YouTube if it is exposed.
- Configure the encoder. Select the source file or playlist, confirm looping behavior, and set the resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate. Make sure the NAS can sustain those settings.
- Run a test broadcast. Check video, audio, stream health, network use, and playback on the YouTube watch page. Test the behavior at a file boundary and, if possible, after a controlled restart or brief connection interruption.
- Monitor and plan for failures. Confirm how the encoder restarts and reconnects, and decide who or what will alert you if the stream stops. A NAS’s ability to store the files does not establish automatic recovery.
Plan for YouTube’s 12-hour archive and DVR caveat
YouTube Help says completed streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Its DVR guidance warns that DVR may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. A continuous 24/7 broadcast therefore should not be treated as a guarantee of one complete replay or unlimited rewind history. If you need a complete archive of the documentary, keep a separate recording and confirm YouTube’s current behavior for the stream format you plan to run.

Choose where the encoder runs
There is no universally best option; compare the setup burden, recurring cost, control of the files and stream, encoding needs, and recovery plan.
| Approach | Strength | Check before choosing |
|---|---|---|
| Run the encoder on the NAS | Uses existing storage and hardware that may already be on continuously. | Model and operating-system support, encoding capacity, looping, reconnection, heat, and sustained upload stability. |
| Use a separate local encoder host | Keeps encoding work off the NAS and can offer a wider choice of software. | Power use, unattended restarts, file access from the NAS, and how the separate host recovers from failures. |
| Use a cloud 24/7 streaming service | Moves continuous encoding and playback away from home hardware. YouTube lists Gyre as a cloud-based tool for 24/7 prerecorded streams. | Check current cost, service limits, content and control terms, upload workflow, and dependence on the vendor. YouTube notes that verified encoders it lists are not made by YouTube. |
Synology documents a Surveillance Station Live Broadcast feature that sends selected camera feeds to YouTube using an RTMP path and key, and supports H.264. That is evidence of a camera-broadcast feature in that ecosystem—not evidence that it loops prerecorded files. Do not treat ordinary NAS video playback, camera streaming, and prerecorded-file encoding as interchangeable capabilities. See Synology’s Live Broadcast documentation.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does a NAS’s built-in YouTube camera-broadcast feature prove it can loop a documentary file?
No. A camera-broadcast feature and prerecorded-file playback are different workflows; confirm looping support for the exact encoder and NAS model.
