In Pokémon lore, a Sinnoh folk story is often discussed as describing humans and Pokémon marrying in the distant past. That fictional account does not establish that a person can marry a Pokémon in real life. The legal answer depends on the jurisdiction; the sources cited here do not determine how any jurisdiction would treat such a marriage specifically.
What does Pokémon lore say about humans marrying Pokémon?
The marriage idea comes from a folk-story passage associated with Sinnoh in the Pokémon games. The official Pokémon pages describe Sinnoh as a region with myths passed down through the ages, but they do not reproduce that particular passage. The sources cited here therefore establish the myth-rich setting, not the exact wording or interpretation of the story.
Online retellings and translations should not be treated as verified verbatim official text. The passage is fictional lore, and a story about a distant past does not establish a rule for present-day law—even within the fictional world.
Can someone legally marry a Pokémon in real life?
There is no universal legal answer established by the sources cited here. Marriage law varies by jurisdiction, and the reviewed material does not specifically decide whether a Pokémon—or any fictional character—could qualify as a legal spouse.

For Japan, an official parliamentary answer quotes Article 24 of the Constitution: “婚姻は、両性の合意のみに基いて成立” (“Marriage shall be based only on the mutual consent of both sexes,” in the government’s quoted wording). That is relevant legal context, not a specific ruling about Pokémon, and it should not be generalized into a definitive answer for every jurisdiction. A precise legal answer would require identifying the jurisdiction and consulting its applicable law.
