Sometimes—but a free-tier label is not a promise that a VPS can encode and deliver a continuous YouTube stream. The deciding factors are sustained CPU performance, the source and encoding settings, outbound-data limits, region and account eligibility, and whether the free offer lasts for the whole run. Provider allowance pages do not benchmark your FFmpeg workload. Test the exact stream you intend to run and check both the VPS and YouTube’s stream-health messages before relying on it.
What determines whether a free VPS can keep the stream running?
There are two separate questions: can the virtual machine encode your video in real time, and can the account send enough data to YouTube without exceeding its allowance or incurring charges? A VM can have ample documented memory and still fail to encode a particular source at the intended resolution or frame rate. Conversely, an encoder that runs smoothly may still use more outbound data than the free allowance provides.
- Compute: FFmpeg must process the source at least as fast as playback. The actual result depends on the VM’s sustained CPU, codec, filters, resolution, frame rate, and encoder settings. Provider specifications alone do not establish a supported FFmpeg resolution or codec.
- Outbound transfer: A continuous live stream sends data to YouTube for as long as it runs. At YouTube’s recommended H.264 bitrate for 1080p30, even one day of video payload is substantial.
- Eligibility and continuity: Offers may be limited by account type, region, monthly quotas, trial period, or available capacity. A temporary credit or trial is not the same as a long-term free host.
- Network and recovery: A successful test at one moment does not guarantee stable throughput or uninterrupted VM availability later. Monitor the actual stream and have a plan for reconnects.
How the documented free offers compare
The figures below describe provider-published offers, not FFmpeg benchmarks. Terms, eligible regions, account conditions, and available capacity can change; check the applicable provider terms for your account before deployment.
| Provider offer | Documented compute and transfer | Important conditions | What it means for a continuous stream |
|---|---|---|---|
| Oracle Cloud Infrastructure Always Free | Oracle documents up to two VM.Standard.E2.1.Micro AMD instances and an Ampere A1 allowance of 1,500 OCPU hours and 9,000 GB-hours per month—equivalent, for Always Free tenancies, to 2 OCPUs and 12 GB of memory. Oracle also lists 10 TB per month of outbound data. | Compute must be provisioned in the tenancy’s home region. Available instance count depends on allocated OCPUs and boot volume; confirm current account limits and regional availability. | This is a larger documented resource envelope than Google’s qualifying e2-micro offer, but it does not establish that your particular FFmpeg job will encode in real time or remain stable. |
| Google Cloud Compute Engine Free Tier | Google documents one non-preemptible e2-micro VM per month in us-west1, us-central1, or us-east1, 30 GB-months of standard persistent disk, and 1 GB per month of outbound transfer from North America to listed destinations. |
The eligible VM hours are a monthly total, not a full free VM for every instance. Google’s separate Free Trial offers $300 in credit for 90 days; resources stop when the trial closes if you do not upgrade. | The listed 1 GB egress allowance is far below even one day of a typical 1080p live-stream payload. Treat the trial as an experiment, not a long-term free hosting plan. |
| AWS Free Tier | The reviewed AWS billing information describes free-tier categories and account-plan conditions; it does not establish a specific continuously available VM size for this use case. | AWS distinguishes Always Free monthly allowances from short-term trials. Availability and overage treatment vary with the account plan, service, and credits. | Do not assume that the general Free Tier label includes an always-free VM suitable for continuous streaming. Verify the specific compute offer and network charges for your account. |
These offers are not a like-for-like performance or total-cost comparison: region, eligible destinations, account terms, compute availability, and charges differ. In particular, the Oracle and Google outbound figures have different conditions, so they should not be treated as equivalent allowances.

Estimate the outbound data before choosing a VM
YouTube recommends 14 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p30. At a constant 14 megabits per second, the video payload alone is approximately 151.2 decimal GB per 24 hours: 14 megabits/second Ă— 86,400 seconds Ă· 8. Over 30 days, that is approximately 4.54 decimal TB of video payload. This is arithmetic based on the bitrate, not a provider-published transfer statistic.
Actual billed transfer may differ because of audio, container and protocol overhead, changes in bitrate, and the provider’s billing conventions. Compare your estimated use with the exact outbound allowance and destinations covered by your account. An allowance that appears large in isolation may not cover a full month of nonstop streaming.

Use YouTube’s encoder settings as the starting point
YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS and the H.264, H.265, and AV1 codecs, recommends constant bitrate (CBR), and recommends a two-second keyframe interval with a maximum of four seconds. For H.264, its listed bitrate recommendations include 8 Mbps for 720p30, 14 Mbps for 1080p30, and 17 Mbps for 1080p60. These are YouTube recommendations, not a guarantee that a free VM can encode at those settings.
- Choose settings for the actual source. Match the intended resolution and frame rate rather than testing a lighter stream and assuming the production encode will behave the same.
- Use the recommended keyframe interval. Set two seconds; do not exceed four seconds.
- Prefer RTMPS. YouTube recommends streaming with RTMPS, the secure extension to RTMP.
- Test representative content. Include audio and movement similar to the planned stream; a static or silent test may not represent the workload.
Test the VM before scheduling a continuous stream
Do not use a provider’s published CPU or memory allowance as a substitute for an encoder test. Test the same input, codec, filters, resolution, frame rate, audio, and bitrate you plan to use. Send a private or unlisted test stream, then inspect FFmpeg’s progress and YouTube’s stream-health messages.

- Confirm the offer. Check that the VM shape is available to your account in its region, how monthly compute hours are counted, what outbound destinations are covered, and what happens when a trial or credit ends.
- Prepare the representative source. Use the actual file or a representative segment, with the planned audio and motion. For a loop, test the transition between the end and beginning as well.
- Set YouTube’s stream destination securely. Use the server URL and stream key from YouTube Studio. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it, commit it to a script repository, or include it in logs or screenshots. Prefer RTMPS when the chosen destination supports it.
- Run a private or unlisted test. Keep the target bitrate, codec, frame rate, and filters unchanged. A lower-quality test does not validate the production configuration.
- Watch sustained performance. Check whether FFmpeg processes at real time or faster without an accumulating backlog, and observe CPU use, dropped frames, and network stability over a representative period. A brief successful start is not evidence of sustained capacity.
- Check YouTube’s stream health. Review the health indicators and messages during the test. YouTube advises testing before going live and monitoring stream health during the event.
- Recalculate transfer for the intended duration. Estimate bitrate × runtime, then allow for audio and overhead and compare the result with the provider’s applicable quota and billing rules.
This test process can show whether your particular workload works under the conditions you tested; it cannot guarantee future VM availability, unchanged quotas, or uninterrupted network service.
Run it from a VPS with FFmpeg
If you choose the do-it-yourself route, the core arrangement is a looped file input, a real-time input rate, an encoder configured to match the tested YouTube settings, and YouTube’s RTMPS destination. The following is a template, not a universal command: replace the input and destination for your setup, and confirm your installed FFmpeg build supports the selected encoder.

-f flv "$YOUTUBE_RTMPS_URL/$YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY"
This example is for a 1080p30 H.264 stream and uses a 14 Mbps video target drawn from YouTube’s recommendation. The keyframe parameters target a two-second interval at 30 fps. The example does not establish that libx264 at this preset will run in real time on any particular free VM. It also assumes the input’s dimensions and frame rate are suitable; add scaling or other filters only if required, then retest because filtering increases work.
-rereads a file at its native playback rate rather than sending it as fast as possible.-stream_loop -1loops the input indefinitely; test the loop point for abrupt audio or visual transitions.-b:v,-maxrate, and-bufsizecontrol the video rate behavior in this example. The target is not a promise of identical bitrate every second, nor a substitute for checking YouTube’s recommendations for a different resolution or frame rate.-g 60and-keyint_min 60correspond to a two-second keyframe interval at 30 fps. If you change frame rate, adjust the interval accordingly while keeping it within YouTube’s four-second maximum.- Store the stream key outside the command history and source code where possible. Environment variables still require appropriate access controls and should not be exposed in diagnostic output.
- The command only starts FFmpeg. It does not by itself provide a service manager, monitoring, automatic restart, secure secret storage, or recovery after a VM or network failure. Configure and test those separately if you need unattended operation.
Or let it run in the cloud
For an uploaded recording or playlist that should keep a YouTube channel live, StreamNeo is a managed cloud alternative: upload the video, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It is for uploaded videos streaming to YouTube, not a camera-based live feed.

Common failure signs and what to check
- FFmpeg falls behind playback or frames accumulate: the VM may not sustain the selected encode or filters. Check CPU use and encoder speed; retest with the exact settings. A test with a lower frame rate or simpler source does not validate the intended stream.
- YouTube reports poor stream health: check the selected bitrate, keyframe interval, connection stability, and whether the server is actually sending the intended stream. Run another representative test and review the health messages rather than assuming a successful FFmpeg connection means the stream is healthy.
- The stream works, then stops after a quota or trial boundary: verify whether the resource was covered by a monthly allowance, temporary trial credit, or account-specific terms. Google’s Free Trial is separate from its Free Tier VM allowance; resources stop when the trial closes without an upgrade.
- Transfer use is much higher than expected: compare actual runtime and bitrate with the estimate, include audio and overhead, and check how the provider counts outbound destinations and data. Do not treat a video-payload calculation as an exact invoice prediction.
- The VM cannot be provisioned in the expected region: check the offer’s home-region or eligible-region requirements and current account limits. Documented quotas do not guarantee capacity in every region or account.
- The loop has a visible or audible jump: inspect the source’s start and end and test the loop transition. FFmpeg’s infinite-loop option repeats the file; it does not smooth or edit its endpoints.
When a free VPS is—and is not—a sensible choice
A free VM can be useful for learning FFmpeg, validating a workflow, or running a limited test when the account’s terms and quotas fit. It is a poor basis for promising a continuous channel unless the actual VM passes a sustained representative test and the outbound allowance, account eligibility, and continuity terms cover the full intended run. For documentary channels using long recordings or playlists, validate not just whether the stream starts, but whether the entire operating arrangement can keep it live without a trial ending, quota exhaustion, encoder lag, or an unattended failure.
